If you have an email account with Freeskiing.com, you are probably having problems logging in to read your email over the last couple of weeks. We have had huge problems with spammers flooding our servers and making them un-usable, as well as many technical issues with our email server. In an effort to fix this we have done alot of research to find out how we can cure this problems for good. Google has allowed us to transfer all of our Freeskiing.com email accounts to Gmail (Google's email service). This means you will get to use their great email interface for your email and have a much larger email account. Currently, Gmail allows accounts to store more than 2 GB of email. We will be making this move this week and hope to have the email back to a normal state by Friday Dec 22. We appologize for this break in email service and hope this solution will fit your needs.
We will be posting instructions on how to check your new Freeskiing.com Gmail account as soon as they are setup. We will still allow you to log into your old email account here (as soon as we get it running again) to grab contacts and old emails until the end of the month.
Thank you all for your patience.

LOS ANGELES - ESPN Winter X Games 11 announces new sports, new athletes and more coverage going into the eleventh annual event. In addition to Skiing and Snowboard and ESPN‚s announcement last month of Snowmobile Freestyle being added to the sports lineup, Winter X Games 11 will include its first ever disabled discipline, Mono Skier X. First introduced as a demo event at Winter X Games Nine, this year‚s event will be modeled after Winter X mainstays, Skier X and Snowboarder X. It will feature the top 16 disabled men and women racing in individual sit-skis in heats of four. Snowboarding will add the discipline of Snowboard Best Trick Showdown, and Moto X will not be in the Winter X Games lineup but remain a pillar in summer and international events. Fifteen hours of live programming on ESPN and ABC will be offered as well as Winter X Games 11 coverage on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360, SportsCenter and ESPN2‚s X Center.
“As we move into the eleventh Winter X Games, we couldn‚t be more excited with our lineup of sports and the new group of athletes we have participating with Snowmobile Freestyle and Mono Skier X,” said Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment. “We are dedicated to bringing a variety of original and compelling content to the sports fans and confident with these sport additions we will do so at Winter X Games 11.”
The annual Winter X Games is the premier action winter sports event in the world and showcases more than 250 of the world‚s top athletes including 28 Olympians who competed in last year‚s Winter X Games 10 prior to traveling to Turin, Italy. In addition to Snowboard SuperPipe (added in 1998), the Olympics added Snowboard Boardercross an event that has been part of Winter X Games since the beginning. Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Skicross, known as Skier X in the Winter X Games, would be added to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Skier X was introduced to Winter X Games in 1998 with 30 competitors and was the first competition of its kind for the sport of skiing.
Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen/ Snowmass will continue to host the Winter X Games through 2010. Winter X Games 11 is scheduled for Jan 25-28, 2007 with free entrance to the public.

Voting, like throwing your first 360, getting
first chair, or making out in the gondy, is a rite of passage.
Unfortunately, casting a ballot in America today usually amounts to
selecting the person you dislike the least.
Luckily, there’s the 2007 Powder Reader Poll, where we ask our reading
faithful to vote for their favorite skiers. It’s your chance to tell us
who you think represents the best of our sport. It’s a positively
joyous experience! No annoying campaign ads, no standing in line, and
no confusion with those old hags at the voting precinct.
So stand up and be heard. From now until January 1, 2007, you can cast
your vote for the 10 male and five female skiers you believe to be the
best of the best. Just type in a name to make your selection.
Winners will be announced at the Seventh Annual Powder Video and Reader Poll awards show in Aspen, Colorado, on January 27.
Vote Right Now!

IMPORTANT FREESKIING ATHLETE INFORMATION
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2007 Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series & Freeskiing World Tour Athlete Information
-EVENT SCHEDULE
-NEW EVENT & REGISTRATION POLICIES
-PRE-QUALIFIED ATHLETE LIST
TO ALL ATHLETES:
Winter is fast approaching and that means so is competition season. After a hugely successful tour in 2006, MSI has decided to grow the Subaru U.S. Freesking Series by adding a fifth event. With the new event and expanded programs, such as same-day video, photo, and story coverage, 2007 is set to be the best year yet.
Registration for all events in the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series will begin on:
November 1, 2006.
To register, please log onto www.usfreeskiing.com. To guarantee entry, athletes interested in competing—including World Tour IFSA pre-qualified athletes (see list below)—must register prior to the event and pay in full to be considered officially registered. A partial payment/deposit, will NOT secure you a spot. As always, entries are limited and events sell out within days, so we urge you to register early to avoid disappointment.
On the first morning of each event all athletes must check in at registration and sign waivers, purchase lift tickets, and receive bibs and start order. As a reminder, IFSA (International Freeskiers Association) memberships ARE REQUIRED for all athletes competing in the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Tour and Freeskiing World Tour. Please go to www.freeskiers.org to sign up. We are working to add a link from usfreeskiing.com to register for membership.
Due to the popularity of the Snowbird and Kirkwood World Tour Qualifiers, the qualifier run has been extended to a two-day event, with each athlete still only getting one run to qualify. This will increase the amount of athletes who are given the chance to qualify for the World Tour event.

Whistler Blackcomb has acquired Whistler
Heli-Skiing in a transaction that significantly increases Whistler
Blackcomb’s skiable terrain and offers guests over a half a million
acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain. The purchase adds Whistler
Heli-Skiing’s tenure of 494,000 acres throughout the Whistler
backcountry to Whistler Blackcomb’s 8,171 acres of in-bounds skiing,
creating a ski area of 502,171 acres or 785 square miles.
The four previous owners of Whistler Heli-Skiing –
Doug O’Mara, John Hetherington, Andrew Wilkins and Ken Hardy – will
continue to be actively involved in the business. They will continue to
provide management and expert guiding for Whistler Heli-Skiing while
Whistler Blackcomb will provide added sales, marketing and operational
support.
“Whistler Blackcomb is very excited with the new
opportunity to grow the Whistler Heli-Skiing business,” says Dave
Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb’s Chief Operating Officer. “Under the
continued expert management and guiding of Doug, John, Andrew and Ken,
and with the valuable marketing, sales and operational infrastructure
that Whistler Blackcomb can provide, the business is poised for even
greater success. There are huge opportunities for us to market
heli-skiing alongside our current in-bounds experiences.”
“This announcement is great news for Whistler as
it presents an opportunity to package guest products that are unique in
the ski resort vacation market,” says Doug O’Mara from Whistler
Heli-Skiing. “There are very few places in the world where a world
class ski resort can provide its guests with a heli-ski experience on
glaciers within a five minute flight from the village. With Whistler
Blackcomb’s strong sales and marketing efforts, the opportunities to
create unbelievable packages and attract new guests to the resort will
be significant. My partners and I are very happy to be able to take
Whistler Heli-Skiing to this next level with Whistler Blackcomb.”
Another major benefit of the two companies joining
forces is the incredible wealth of shared snow science knowledge that
will now be available to both companies. Some of the most experienced
mountain guides and ski patrollers in the business will now share years
of snow data collection and snow study. In a business that relies daily
on the predictability of its forecasting and reporting, this shared
intelligence will be a significant asset.
The 25 year-old heli-ski company, the only one
based in Whistler Resort, will still operate as Whistler Heli-Skiing,
and will be a wholly owned subsidiary company of Whistler Blackcomb.
For further information on either company, visit www.whistlerblackcomb.com or www.whistlerheliskiing.com.
Rossland, BC-Red Mountain Resort announced its dates for the 2007 Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships to be held January 6th-15th at Western Canada’s oldest ski resort, featuring over 100 of the world’s best freeskiers. The weeklong event carries a cash purse of $10,000 for the competitors that best tame the steep, chutes of Mount Roberts, one of Red’s five mountain peaks. “We are really stoked to host this event for the 6th consecutive season, making this Canada’s longest running and most legendary Open big mountain competition. Red welcomes athletes, sponsors and media to Rossland, to enjoy our mountain hospitality and a superb competition on our world-class terrain”, states VP of Sales and Marketing Erik Kalacis. “For spectators, Mount Roberts is an ideal setting to view these unbelievably talented athletes. The competition, the skiing and the after-parties will surely deliver a highly entertaining event.” The format of the competition will follow IFSA Big Mountain Freeskiing guidelines, which dictates that participants ski the mountain creatively, unrestricted by gates or formal course layouts, while they take aggressive lines and make big drops on Roberts’ varied and challenging terrain. Judges of the championship will evaluate skiers on five categories – line choice, fluidity, technique, aggression, and control. Jeff Holden, head judge of the competition last year, returns to lead his team of judges for another year. Event Schedule: Date Event & Location Saturday Jan. 6th, 2007 Junior Event, Ages 12-17, Lynx Line Thursday Jan. 11th, 2007 Open Qualifier, Ages 18+, Lynx Line Friday Jan. 12th, 2007 Semi-Finals, Mount Roberts Saturday Jan. 13th, 2007 Finals, Mount Roberts, Awards Ceremony Sunday Jan. 14th, 2007 Weather Contingency Day Registration is open to skiers 18 years and older. On January 11th, contestants will begin qualification on the mountain’s most difficult in-bounds run, Lynx Line, in order to secure one of the 50 sought-after semifinal slots. Finalists will compete the following two days on backcountry and technical Mount Roberts, adjacent to the resort, before winners are announced on January 15th.
New last season and returning due to its unbelievable popularity and turnout is the Junior event for kids ages 12-17. Held on Lynx Line underneath the Motherlode Chair, youths will participate in a one-day event on January 6th. Teams from as far away as Utah and Vermont have signed up to test their skills on some of the most challenging terrain in the region against the newest “up and comers” from the Kootenays. Registration forms and more information on the 6th annual Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships will be available after October 1st by logging on to www.redresort.com

Wanaka teenager and
rising ski star Jossi Wells proved he is up there with the world’s best
after taking first place in the slopestyle event at the NZ Free Ski
Open today at Snow Park NZ.
Canadian Kaya Turski, who is also a pro rollerblader, picked up the winning title for the women’s slopestyle event. Wells
(16), who is now New Zealand’s top freestyle skier, displayed an
outstanding performance at today’s event, including a switch 720 double
nose grab (rotating twice and holding onto the front tips of his skis
before landing), a switch 630 (rotating one-and-three-quarter times)
before landing successfully on the rail, as well as a switch 1080
(three rotations). “Everything
he did was so smooth and so easy. Jossi’s improved so much this year.
Last year, he was good, but he didn’t quite have the tricks to take out
the big guns. But now, he’s proved he’s one of the world’s best,” Open
head judge Jake McCleary said. Wells
said his winning run was one of the best he’d ever had. “I’m aiming for
the world scene, and this definitely a great competition with lots of
international riders. Every little step counts.” Turski
(18), has been freestyle skiing for a year-and-a-half. Her winning run
included a cork 540 mute grab (spinning one-and-a-half times off axis,
grabbing the front of one ski with the opposite hand). She also
successfully pulled off a switch 900 (rotating two-and-a-half times)
and attempted a switch 1080 - a world-first in women’s free skiing, but
unfortunately her ski came off on landing. “The
standard of competition was unbelievable – we were blown away with
today’s event. Competitors were all throwing down as hard as they
could,” McCleary said. The
slopestyle course, designed by Snow Park NZ slopes manager Frank Wells,
began with a quarterpipe-style drop-in, down to a custom Snow Park NZ
stair feature. Skiers then approached a gap-to-snow box, before moving
to a 14m jump, followed by an 18m jump. They completed the course by
hitting a flat-down rail and a jump-to-down box, which is the latest
craze in free skiing slopestyle and makes for spectacular tricks, such
as 900 and 1080 rotations. The
NZ Free Ski Open is the southern hemisphere’s largest event of its
kind. With park and pipe events now completed, the next stage of the
competition the
Volkl Big Mountain prelims, which take place at Treble Cone on Friday
August 18. The finals will be held at Treble Cone on the first
following fine weather day.

NEW 100 PASSENGER AERIAL TRAMWAYfor Jackson Hole Mountain Resort
(Teton Village, Wyo., July 31, 2006)
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) officials announced today their
intention to enhance the legacy created over the last 40 years by
committing to build a new 100 passenger, state of the art aerial
tramway from the base in Teton Village to the summit of Rendezvous
Mountain, a vertical rise of 4,139’. This lift will have the longest
continual vertical rise of any ski lift in North America. It will
replace the existing smaller aerial tram that will cease to operate
October 1, 2006.
“I am very proud of our company leading
this two and a half year process to a successful conclusion,” stated
Jerry Blann, JHMR President. “This outcome would not have been possible
without our dedicated owners, the Kemmerer Family and our Board of
Directors. They deserve recognition for their commitment to Jackson
Hole Mountain Resort, Teton County and the State of Wyoming.”
JHMR has contracted with
Doppelmayr/CTEC to construct the new Jackson Hole Mountain Resort
Aerial Tram and anticipates a scheduled opening December 2008.
Preliminary discussions are taking place with the Forest Service
regarding approvals required for the replacement of the tram. With an
increased capacity of 100 passengers per cabin, the uphill capacity
will increase to over 600 passengers an hour, pending Forest Service
approval. Carney Architects, a local Jackson firm, is developing
concepts for bottom and top terminal enclosures.
“We hope with this decision Jackson Hole will remain the truly unique
place it is for all who love the mountains year round, like we do. When
we bought the Resort we knew it needed investment and were prepared for
that, but the tram replacement has taken a lot of deep thinking to
resolve,” stated John Kemmerer III, Owner JHMR. “Our family considers
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort an integral part of this incredible
community and we feel privileged to be able to leave such a legacy for
years to come.” Kemmerer added.
“The enormity of this project was obvious from the beginning. When
we identified the need to decommission the existing tram we immediately
began researching what could replace such a lift,” continued Blann. “We
studied many options and reduced them to a Tram or Bi-Cable Gondola. We
all agreed the iconic nature of our “red box” was something to be
treasured but we kept options open until the final and most recent
decision. Ultimately the final analysis was financial. We are a small,
family owned company with finite resources. This new tram will cost an
estimated $25 million and so far we have had to plan on funding the
entire project privately. In conjunction with the $14 million already
committed to capital improvements this summer there will be a strain
felt on our company resources, but we are steadfast in this decision
thanks to the commitment from our owners. On our 40th Anniversary the
company has reached a pinnacle of investment,” stated Blann.
“The new tram will ultimately require
additional improvements including a redevelopment of Nick Wilson’s Café
into a multi-purpose base lodge. The Kemmerer family’s dedication to
invest in JHMR core business on public lands for the enjoyment of this
community and visiting guests is completely unique in the winter
recreation industry.” Blann added.
“This huge investment by JHMR ownership
to build a new tram stands alone in our industry”, stated Michael
Berry, President National Ski Area Association. “The tram at Jackson
Hole is iconic. It is recognized around the world as a lift that
accesses some of the most spectacular terrain in North America. It is
beloved by locals and sought after by destination visitors.” added
Berry.
While making improvements, Jackson Hole
Mountain Resort remains committed to preserving the Old West. Entering
our 40th season the same old-fashioned hospitality that welcomed
yesterday's mavericks and outlaws, still welcomes today's skiers,
snowboarders and vacationers. With the new Bridger Restaurant, new East
Ridge Chair and a new 100 passenger tram in the near future, the legend
continues. For more JHMR information please visit jacksonhole40.com.
