Rossland, BC-Red Mountain Resort announced its dates for the 2007 Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships to be held January 6th-15th at Western Canada’s oldest ski resort, featuring over 100 of the world’s best freeskiers. The weeklong event carries a cash purse of $10,000 for the competitors that best tame the steep, chutes of Mount Roberts, one of Red’s five mountain peaks.

“We are really stoked to host this event for the 6th consecutive season, making this Canada’s longest running and most legendary Open big mountain competition. Red welcomes athletes, sponsors and media to Rossland, to enjoy our mountain hospitality and a superb competition on our world-class terrain”, states VP of Sales and Marketing Erik Kalacis. “For spectators, Mount Roberts is an ideal setting to view these unbelievably talented athletes. The competition, the skiing and the after-parties will surely deliver a highly entertaining event.”

The format of the competition will follow IFSA Big Mountain Freeskiing guidelines, which dictates that participants ski the mountain creatively, unrestricted by gates or formal course layouts, while they take aggressive lines and make big drops on Roberts’ varied and challenging terrain. Judges of the championship will evaluate skiers on five categories – line choice, fluidity, technique, aggression, and control. Jeff Holden, head judge of the competition last year, returns to lead his team of judges for another year.

Event Schedule:

Date Event & Location
Saturday Jan. 6th, 2007 Junior Event, Ages 12-17, Lynx Line
Thursday Jan. 11th, 2007 Open Qualifier, Ages 18+, Lynx Line
Friday Jan. 12th, 2007 Semi-Finals, Mount Roberts
Saturday Jan. 13th, 2007 Finals, Mount Roberts, Awards Ceremony
Sunday Jan. 14th, 2007 Weather Contingency Day

Registration is open to skiers 18 years and older. On January 11th, contestants will begin qualification on the mountain’s most difficult in-bounds run, Lynx Line, in order to secure one of the 50 sought-after semifinal slots. Finalists will compete the following two days on backcountry and technical Mount Roberts, adjacent to the resort, before winners are announced on January 15th.

New last season and returning due to its unbelievable popularity and turnout is the Junior event for kids ages 12-17. Held on Lynx Line underneath the Motherlode Chair, youths will participate in a one-day event on January 6th. Teams from as far away as Utah and Vermont have signed up to test their skills on some of the most challenging terrain in the region against the newest “up and comers” from the Kootenays.

Registration forms and more information on the 6th annual Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships will be available after October 1st by logging on to www.redresort.com

Wanaka teenager and rising ski star Jossi Wells proved he is up there with the world’s best after taking first place in the slopestyle event at the NZ Free Ski Open today at Snow Park NZ.

Canadian Kaya Turski, who is also a pro rollerblader, picked up the winning title for the women’s slopestyle event. Wells (16), who is now New Zealand’s top freestyle skier, displayed an outstanding performance at today’s event, including a switch 720 double nose grab (rotating twice and holding onto the front tips of his skis before landing), a switch 630 (rotating one-and-three-quarter times) before landing successfully on the rail, as well as a switch 1080 (three rotations). “Everything he did was so smooth and so easy. Jossi’s improved so much this year. Last year, he was good, but he didn’t quite have the tricks to take out the big guns. But now, he’s proved he’s one of the world’s best,” Open head judge Jake McCleary said. Wells said his winning run was one of the best he’d ever had. “I’m aiming for the world scene, and this definitely a great competition with lots of international riders. Every little step counts.” Turski (18), has been freestyle skiing for a year-and-a-half. Her winning run included a cork 540 mute grab (spinning one-and-a-half times off axis, grabbing the front of one ski with the opposite hand). She also successfully pulled off a switch 900 (rotating two-and-a-half times) and attempted a switch 1080 - a world-first in women’s free skiing, but unfortunately her ski came off on landing.  “The standard of competition was unbelievable – we were blown away with today’s event. Competitors were all throwing down as hard as they could,” McCleary said. The slopestyle course, designed by Snow Park NZ slopes manager Frank Wells, began with a quarterpipe-style drop-in, down to a custom Snow Park NZ stair feature. Skiers then approached a gap-to-snow box, before moving to a 14m jump, followed by an 18m jump. They completed the course by hitting a flat-down rail and a jump-to-down box, which is the latest craze in free skiing slopestyle and makes for spectacular tricks, such as 900 and 1080 rotations. The NZ Free Ski Open is the southern hemisphere’s largest event of its kind. With park and pipe events now completed, the next stage of the competition the Volkl Big Mountain prelims, which take place at Treble Cone on Friday August 18. The finals will be held at Treble Cone on the first following fine weather day.

NEW 100 PASSENGER AERIAL TRAMWAYfor Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

(Teton Village, Wyo., July 31, 2006) Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) officials announced today their intention to enhance the legacy created over the last 40 years by committing to build a new 100 passenger, state of the art aerial tramway from the base in Teton Village to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain, a vertical rise of 4,139’. This lift will have the longest continual vertical rise of any ski lift in North America. It will replace the existing smaller aerial tram that will cease to operate October 1, 2006.

“I am very proud of our company leading this two and a half year process to a successful conclusion,” stated Jerry Blann, JHMR President. “This outcome would not have been possible without our dedicated owners, the Kemmerer Family and our Board of Directors. They deserve recognition for their commitment to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Teton County and the State of Wyoming.”

JHMR has contracted with Doppelmayr/CTEC to construct the new Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Aerial Tram and anticipates a scheduled opening December 2008. Preliminary discussions are taking place with the Forest Service regarding approvals required for the replacement of the tram. With an increased capacity of 100 passengers per cabin, the uphill capacity will increase to over 600 passengers an hour, pending Forest Service approval. Carney Architects, a local Jackson firm, is developing concepts for bottom and top terminal enclosures.

“We hope with this decision Jackson Hole will remain the truly unique place it is for all who love the mountains year round, like we do. When we bought the Resort we knew it needed investment and were prepared for that, but the tram replacement has taken a lot of deep thinking to resolve,” stated John Kemmerer III, Owner JHMR. “Our family considers Jackson Hole Mountain Resort an integral part of this incredible community and we feel privileged to be able to leave such a legacy for years to come.” Kemmerer added.

“The enormity of this project was obvious from the beginning. When we identified the need to decommission the existing tram we immediately began researching what could replace such a lift,” continued Blann. “We studied many options and reduced them to a Tram or Bi-Cable Gondola. We all agreed the iconic nature of our “red box” was something to be treasured but we kept options open until the final and most recent decision. Ultimately the final analysis was financial. We are a small, family owned company with finite resources. This new tram will cost an estimated $25 million and so far we have had to plan on funding the entire project privately. In conjunction with the $14 million already committed to capital improvements this summer there will be a strain felt on our company resources, but we are steadfast in this decision thanks to the commitment from our owners. On our 40th Anniversary the company has reached a pinnacle of investment,” stated Blann.

“The new tram will ultimately require additional improvements including a redevelopment of Nick Wilson’s Café into a multi-purpose base lodge. The Kemmerer family’s dedication to invest in JHMR core business on public lands for the enjoyment of this community and visiting guests is completely unique in the winter recreation industry.” Blann added.

“This huge investment by JHMR ownership to build a new tram stands alone in our industry”, stated Michael Berry, President National Ski Area Association. “The tram at Jackson Hole is iconic. It is recognized around the world as a lift that accesses some of the most spectacular terrain in North America. It is beloved by locals and sought after by destination visitors.” added Berry.

While making improvements, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort remains committed to preserving the Old West. Entering our 40th season the same old-fashioned hospitality that welcomed yesterday's mavericks and outlaws, still welcomes today's skiers, snowboarders and vacationers. With the new Bridger Restaurant, new East Ridge Chair and a new 100 passenger tram in the near future, the legend continues. For more JHMR information please visit jacksonhole40.com.

Storm Mountain Publishing Company
Enters Partnership Agreement with SNOWBOARD Magazine
Boulder, CO (July 31, 2006) - Storm Mountain Publishing Company (SMP), parent of FREESKIER magazine, has entered into a long-term partnership agreement with Global United Publishing's SNOWBOARD magazine. It was announced today by SMP President & CEO Bradford Fayfield. The new arrangement comes just weeks after SNOWBOARDs Publisher Mark Sullivan announced that his company would not be publishing its September issue due to financial constraints. The news spurred widespread discussion within the snowboarding industry and abroad.

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for SNOWBOARD and FREESKIER, said Fayfield. As independent publishers, Mark and I have faced similar challenges competing against the corporate media giants. This union will allow us to work together to level the playing field and take our respective titles to entirely new levels.

Sullivan and the staff at SNOWBOARD are enthused about the partnership:

We had several interested parties, and ultimately we decided that joining forces with Storm Mountain Publishing and its team was the best way to go, said Sullivan. Our titles complement one another perfectly, and having the infrastructure and resources of a successful, independent publisher will help us reach the next level. Storm Mountain Publishing also shares our philosophy of contributing to the health and long-term growth of our respective sports.

The parties expect to finalize the partnership within the next 30 days. More detailed information about the transaction will be forthcoming.
Storm Mountain Publishing Company was founded in 1997 by Bradford Fayfield and publishes FREESKIER magazine, Freeskier.com, Fantasy Freeride League, SKI TIME magazine and Skitimemag.com.
