I got a pair of poles as part of a package...they are a bit long - I really like them and wonder if it's safe/possible to pull off the grips, saw them down and replace the grips or do I need to bite the bullet and just buy new poles? A silly question I know, but forgive me, I'm getting back into skiing after a long hiatus. Thanks!

If they are Alum tube poles, soak the handles in hot water to expand the rubber, then pull the pole out. You will probably have to wedge the handle between your feet or wedge it between the door and the door jam, to hold it tight. Just saw it off with a hacksaw. If they are composite poles then the handle will probably have some epoxy or other glue holding it on. You can try to use the same technique, it may or may not work. There are other techniques to get the handles off with a torch, vise, etc. but they are not advisable unless you know what your doing. "Ski to be free"
