finally Canada has a new government! its taken forever but stephen harper won a minority government this evening with 124 seats. the fact that the liberals have over 100 seats means we're in for an interesting year. even if the NDP, bloc and conservatives ally with each other they won't have a majority of seats, meaning the liberals have the power to tople the new government when ever they see fit. what is everybodys predictions for the next year? i hope to see progress, however, it wouldn't surprise me if somehow the liberals got into power again very soon.

i'm not happy to see a conservative government. I think the liberals were doing a good job. I wasn't a fan of what harper was planning to do. you can't cut taxes, and increase spending. Economically, it just won't balance, but all the while, he was critsizing the liberals for running in debt, when if fact paul martin has done one hell of a job to decrease this country's deficit, and even increase economy.

sure paul martin has been doing a good job in that respect. but who put us in debt in the first place? most of the debt that has been erased lately is a result of irresponsible spending by the liberal party before paul martin got into office. there are so many conflicting opinions and reports on harpers budget plan that its not possible to sort the true from the false. i haven't studied the conservative budget plan at all, so my reason for voting conservative was based mostly on the fact that the liberals have been screwing over the west for year and years. i also took into account that there has been liberal scandal one after the other for the past year or two. im actually plased with the way the government sits now. if the conservative plan doesn't work, and winds up putting us into debt, there is the option of over turning the government (like what happened with the liberals). to the conservatives - feel free to screw up. the east will be right there ready to throw you out of parliment.

I'm pretty unpleased that the pro big business, anti human freedoms conservative party has been elected, even if to a delicate minority to parliment in Canada. What exactly are they offering for the majority of Canadians that apparently elected them? Reduced GST, does that equally effect everyone? well fck no because most of my money as a student is spent on living expenses and school expenses, which arent hit by the GST. I will personally make almost no savings on this, but its still going to cost the federal budget $12 billion dollars, because of how much GST rich people pay. How about eliminating the capital gains tax? does that help you? well it does if you're one of the average 100,000+ income people that make capital gains. These reductions of taxes, while sounding nice in a campaign, only help big business and the rich, while costing 50 billion dollars out of a budget thats supposed to support the social programs we value... particularly health care, which could use some care itself. They're interested in making abortion illegal, and an attempt at using the not-withstanding clause to rescind the gay marriage law. Pro-Iraq war, pro "star wars" BMD program, anti kyoto treaty. Thats my rant for now, I truly hope that the people that voted Conservative simply to vote against the Liberals knew what they were doing.
