Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: Match Stick Productions Custom Booter Shoot
By: whistlerblackcomb

Few weeks ago we were contacted by MSP to build a gap step up for top skiers Sammy Carlson & Simon Dumont. Simon has been busy winning big $ @ pipe comps in the U.S. but Sammy was up to hit our custom booter. The gap step up was 60 feet from take off to uphill landing point. The kicker was approx 15 feet high & the uphill landing was higher @ around 25 feet.

Sammy said, “This is the best jump I have hit all year!” & based on what he was throwing down, looks like he was fully into it! The gap step up took 3 days to build by our skilled Park Grooming lead hand, Olex Iskaat. Stormy weather put the hit on hold then a final groom out made the feature ready for action this week. Sammy made the jump look effortless on every jump, blowing on lookers minds.

Park lead hand, Eric Gendron was in charge of shuttling Sammy back up to the in run start via sled so the action was fast & non stop!  The shoot went into the sunset hours so expect to see some awesome footage in the next MSP film out this Fall. Big thanx to the Parks staff, leads & Olex for building & re grooming the hit so it was ideal for Sammy to hit over & over again.

PNW by Theory-3 Media and Poorboyz Productions & Distribution: PNW presented by Theory-3 Media and Poorboyz Productions & Distribution
By: Theory3Media

For immediate release:

PNW -

Turn Left, Turn Right, Exit Here, Entering, Welcome to...change the
song, pass the chips, are we there yet? From the creators of
[PHOTO]PLAY, we present to you…PNW... Through the creative vision of
Theory-3 Media, in association with Poorboyz Productions &
Distribution we bring to you a 2 Disc, 2 version, high-definition
skiing documentary covering the uncontrolled locations and the endless
possibilities held by the Pacific Northwest.

PNW will not be just your typical rider segmented film, but rather a
production documenting the travels and locations visited by focusing a
unique group of athletes and an entire season on endless areas of
Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington. The film's layout will be
broken up into segments covering the intricate highway systems, with
the joint travels of a few select athletes and crew linking the areas
of the PNW into a smooth flowing production. With lots of research,
and the impulsive choices of athletes and crew, we expect the body of
the film to be made up of random highway towns and certain specific,
but also unplanned backcountry sledding/touring locales. The skiing
within the film will cover all aspects of backcountry jumping, big
mountain skiing, urban/terrain park skiing, and the ideal combination
of all the above.

→NOTE: We will also include 1-2 additional segments within the PNW
documentary covering special event's, super park shoots, special trips
from outside of the Pacific North West. These segments will be tied
into the film with a PNW hook to be used as a recess between other
segments for issues with weather, athlete schedules, etc within the
Pacific North West.

In addition to the feature 'documentary', the PNW product will include
a 2nd DVD focusing on a re-edited, rider segmented film, with new
footage from outside of the PNW, and a slightly more 'typical' layout.
The riders will be giving his folder's worth of footage, and will
choose each specific shot for his ideal additional segment. It will
also include an athlete commentary covering who, what, when, where and
why, that rider chose those shots for his specific segment. We hope to
achieve two exciting films that can truly cover the dynamic that makes
up the sport of skiing, the Northwest and everything the riders, and
production crew put into their short run snow filled season.

I ski mostly at Gore Mountain from around December 25th-March 5th.  I like the terrain park, although I do only 180s. 360s, Daffys, and other simple tricks.  If you see me in the terrain park you will notice me because I do a signature trick.  I like to call this trick "The Masturbater."  I only do it when it's only kids and teens and no parents around.  I ibvented the trick, therefore I am the only one that does it anywhere I go,  Whenever I do it, it gets tons of laughs, and tons of good compliments.  Here's how you do it, but try not to spread the trick too much:

Step 1: Ski down towards your jump and make sure your gloves or mittens are out of your pole straps.
Step 2: About 10-15 feet before the jump, put both of your poles in your left hand.
Step 3: Go off the jump.
Step 4: In mid air, put your skis on your crotch the they bend upward like a penis.
Step 5: Rub your ski poles 2 or 3 times in mid air.
Step 6: Land easily and ski off and hope for compliments.

Snowboard.com News: The Tournament
By: snowboard.com

header.jpg

April 2nd 2006

Event brief

On April 2nd 2006 Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta will play host to The Tournament. This new twist on the team challenge event format will pit team against team in a battle where strategy, skill, and an ability to ride all types of terrain will be the keys to success. Each team rider will compete in one of the three arenas - the quarterpipe, the jump, or the urban jib.  All sessions will have cash prizing for the top three finishers.  The team with the best overall results will take home $6 000 cash, as well as prizes worthy of THE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!

Competition OUTLINE

THE TOURNAMENT offers Canada’s up and coming amateur talent the breakthrough opportunity to compete with top pro riders to vie for cash and bragging rights. This team challenge competition will require a rider from each to compete in one of the three arenas. Riders will compete in 90 min. sessions against members of the opposing teams. Team members will not be competing against each other. Teams will consist of 3 riders. Each rider must compete in only one of the three arenas of competition. A maximum of 35 team entries will be allowed. This will ensure each session will afford riders ample opportunity to showcase their quiver of tricks.

Strategy is the key to this competition as teams choose which member competes in each arena. For a team to be awarded the title of THE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS they must excel in all 3 arenas over the course of the entire day of competition from frozen morning jibbing to slushy afternoon quarterpipes.  Properly choosing when to exploit your teams’ strengths will make the difference between

success and failure.

THE Courses

Riders will be presented with terrain and obstacles designed to challenge and inspire all levels of competitor. THE TOURNAMENT will consist of three arenas - the Quarterpipe, the Urban Jib, and the Jump.

The Quarterpipe will be a 22’ high monster with wallride and jib options.  Riders will be judged on all the features of this unique quarterpipe. Giant airs will be necessary, but you must slay the entire beast to take the top spot.

The Urban Jib will demand versatility and creativity. This unique course will consist of a gauntlet of rails, boxes, wallrides, ledges, bombdrops, and a chimera.

The Jump; The simplest of all the competition arenas. This 50’ straight jump will provide riders the opportunity to display their entire repertoire of tricks.  The jump will have multiple takeoffs.  Booters, floaters, and something out of the ordinary for the true combatant.

STRATEGY

To win The Tournament each team will need to employ a strategy unique to their team that takes advantage of the team challenge format.  Each session will consist of a maximum of 35 competitors, each from different teams.  Points will be awarded to each competitor for their final placing in each session.  Teams will accumulate points for each session. The team with the highest points total from all the sessions will be the overall TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS.  Teams must choose who will compete in each arena.  Alberta in the springtime can be hazardous and icy at 11am, and windy and too soft in the afternoon of the same day. Choosing which team member can ride the best in the varying conditions will be vital to success.  Although, it has been known to snow three feet in 24hrs in April in Calgary.  Teams will need to be prepared to attack the courses and defend against Mother Nature’s offensives. Preparation and strategy will play a part in the outcome of The Tournament.

I just spent probably my best all-round day ever at Cypress Mountain. I did all sorts of terrain and hits. I found a lot of good natural hits to do some sick 360's off, and I did. My friend and I built a nice kicker with a beutiful powder landing. I did some 360's off that as well. We also hit the terrain park where I worked on my tailslides and worked on boardsliding a ride on up-kink rail. That's all I got for now, I leave for Fernie Ski Resort on Tuesday, hopefully I will be in knee deep powder! Peace!

Snowboarding Blogs: 5 Days of Whistler
By: Canadian1st

I just spent 5 awsome days in Whistler snowboarding every day. I didn't do all that much because even though there was 26 cm or so of powder that fell down it was heavy and stick shi*t. I spent my days in the TP (Terrain Park) nailing down my Noseslides and 180 / 360 Mutes. I really thought I had more to say but I guess I don't. Anyway people, keep checking back because there will be more to come!

My worst riding accident:
The early part of 2001 was when I made a HUGE mistake and certainly went too big, resulting in going to the hospital instead of home. I was starting to go over small kickers in the terrain park, and even though I couldn't land most of them, got a rush from going in the air. Being a bit clueless at the time, decided to go for the biggest kicker(jump) of all. I went off it at a very high rate of speed thinking I would land no problem. I landed, on hard pack/ICE in the worst manner possible. A couple employees who witnessed it say I was higher than the nearby chairlift which was a good 25+ feet in the air before my demise of that riding year.

To this day, I remember being way up high in the air, all in "slow motion". They say the "slow motion" thing will happen before a major traumatic event. The thought in my mind was "this is gonna hurt" (not knowing just how bad it would hurt). I had landed pretty much head and shoulders first, resulting in fractures in my middle back at level T7, T8, T9 and later confirmed, and end plate fracture T11. Additionally, I had cracked/separated ribs on the left at T7 & T8 (for you non-medical readers, that would be approximately the nipple line/mid chest). My sternum(breastbone) was mangled into a soggy mess of pieces as well. I was not wearing/did not own a helmet, cracked and yard-saled my goggles. I suspect I probably had a concussion, since I don't remember the exact point of impact and was probably knocked out a couple seconds) I remember sitting up being in horrible pain, but not being able to breathe in or out. It was probably for only a matter of seconds, but seemed like minutes I could not breathe. It was very frightening not being able to take a breath. It was this turning point in life that put my personal ski patrol training and riding on hold for awhile.

Reflection:
Now as a snowboard instructor, I look back and from the minute I chose to go off that jump and now with my knowlege of riding mechanics and general observation of what I see on the hill, I know exactly what went wrong.  A. I had false confidence in myself and my lack of riding abilitlies. B. I had become accustomed to stopping (regular and quick emergency stops) on my heel edge, and my weight was probably about 60-80% at the tail of the board. From the moment I launched off that jump, all that weight at the tail of board(a subconscious fear thing many riders will do) caused me to unintentionally invert into the air with the board all the way up in the air, and at the same time, I was subconsciously trying to use that trusty ol' heel edge for stopping which is what caused my body to become in this position before the worlds hardest slam down into the ice. Also, I had not checked the landing zone prior (or had any knowledge or know how on doing so at the time).

Yeah, I just made it back from Snowshoe (why did I have to come back to PORTSMOTUH, of all places?)... It was definately an adventure for the scrapbook! I got lost a few times, and the guys ended up coming to find me to get me there! LoL Then we skied all day, but that wasn't enough for us. When the lifts closed at Silver Creek, we tried building a snowman, but ended up building this awesome kicker instead. Then I was talked in to staying and skiing another day... Yeah, and then I was coaxed not only into the terrain park (that I promised I would stay out of), but also on to the rails. I shouldn't have believed Crash when he said it doesn't hurt when you fall... Now I can't wear my low-rise jeans because I have this HUGE bruise on my ass and lower back from where I hit the rail! AHH! But... we did get 17 inches of snow over the week! Yay!

Missioned to whistler.... again, last weekend despite a bruuuutal cold I was dying from. Stayed at cara's with 2 cats (which I'm allergic to, by the way) and had just a dandy time coughing and sneezing the roof of the place. Zgud forced me to get a terrain park pass for Blackcomb, I must say I'm a LOT more comfortable skiing big mtn.

Looks like Mt. Baker for reading break with my WA gangstas!

Some andrew jackson dude is riding with me and matt next weekend to do some filming for a snowboard vid he is making- matt has a ski segment in it surprisingly enough. Interesting... Umkay...on the lifts we came up with all the illest hand swears. If you want to learn them make me angry and I'd be happy to show you! Payce.
