Things that make you wish you were me: BIG UPS TO MOMMA DUH!!!
By: SteveDUH

So I get a call from greyhound at some terrible hour of the day like 10am.  They have a package for me.  Needless to say, I like getting things... so I was stoked!
Once I got my shi*t together and finally picked it up, it was almost a week since i was first called.

So I open the glorious package to find this:

AMAZING!

Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: G TEAM ON B
By: whistlerblackcomb

We are very lucky to have 7 dedicated Park groomers on Blackcomb, Marty Gautrey, Oleksander Iskat, Kirby Litzenberger, Jason Josling, Lucas Ouellete & missing from the photos, Tim Austin & Andy Morrison. Marty is the lead hand & Kirby & Andy are our pipe shapers. Our grooming team is the best ever, bringing grooming experience & a Park background to the team. Nothing happens in our parks & pipe without our Groomers who continue to deliver quality building & grooming each night.

The Park staff take care of the hits during the day & the lead hands, Fred Lepage & Eric Gendron, pass on the maintenance & new build requests to Marty & Olex @ the start of their grooming shift. Our Groomers use Pisten Bully snow cats & specifically the Park Bully model. Specialized combing teeth have been added to the Park cat blades for even better ramp shaping when back blading. The Park groomers also use forks which attach to the snow cat blade to move & install the rails. We all owe a huge thank you to our Park groomers on Blackcomb for all their hard work & dedication in bringing you the best Parks & Pipe experience. Here’s a little back ground on our drivers:

Marty Guatrey – Lead hand & grooming the B Park since 1990. Marty started in Lake Louise, made the move to Whistler & has been working in the Parks in winter & Bike Park in the summer. Marty likes working with the younger crew & enjoys skiing what he builds. “I love building jumps. It’s challenging to build & progress with the skiers & snowboarders needs. It’s great to watch people having fun & enjoying my work & I do have a beautiful work environment”.

Oleksander Iskat – Works opposite shifts to Marty & leads the team on Marty’s days off. Olex has been grooming in the Park for 5 years & also has been a key member of the Bike Park in the summer. “I get to build what I want to ride & have the freedom to build an idea. I try to make everything I build as safe as possible. I may not ride the biggest hits but I’m happy to see people progress on our features”.

Jason Josling – 2nd year in the park grooming. J was mostly in the Terrain Garden last season and now grooms the main Nintendo Park & helps out in the Highest Level when needed. “I’m still learning but feel I’m 100% better than last season. My job takes precision, a skilled eye & attention to detail. I try to make everything safe, rideable & fun”.

left to right: Oleksander, Lucas, Kirby, Marty & Jason

Lucas Ouellette – 1st season grooming & worked on the Parks day crew last season. Lucas is mostly in the Terrain Garden but is also working on the secret jib & jump section in the Highest Level Park “I like building stuff & hitting it the next day. It can be lonely @ times yet peaceful inside the snow cat. I crank up the punk rock tunes & build the jumps.”

Kirby Litzenberger – 6 seasons @ Whistler & specifically grooming the super pipe. Kirby took a couple of seasons off but we are stoked that he is back on our pipe team once again. Top riders know when Kirby has cut the pipe, it rides perfect. Kirby built his first pipe in 1988. “It takes vigilance to build the best pipe possible. I want to build & maintain the best pipe. Being rated #2 for pipe is not good enough. Southern Cali is all hype”.

Tim Austin – 2nd year Grooming the Parks & also came from Park day crew. Tim rides what he builds & rides hard. Tim started grooming the Terrain Garden his first season & is now involved in the main Nintendo Park grooming team.

Andy Morrison – Our longest serving groomer with over 16 years of grooming experience, Andy works on the winter & summer Glacier half pipes. Andy has been pipe shaping for over 5 years & has used the Pipe Dragon & the Zaugg Pipe shapers.

Well hope everyone had some happy holidays and Santa gave you everything you asked for...

Santa was pretty good to me... but I'm still waiting for my $1,000,000 cash that I asked to have put in my stocking...

the holidays left me with some pretty blurry memories, but Tyler's Christmas party stands out as a pretty good time.  Weird things happened (I'll remember to use three fingers instead of 1 next time..)

Shredding on the hill was pretty epic, feeling pretty beat up from it.

Seems like everyone got super sick and I was lucky enough to only catch it now... great.

New Years was pretty funny.  I remember saying "I do not want to have a house party" but somehow it still happened.  When in Whistler I guess.  Want to thank Jorden and Whitney for the "high fives" at the end of the night.  Also to Shapiro and Gonzo for laughing at me when I bailed down the front stairs so they got me to help finish a huge (massive) bottle of CC with them.

For those of you that did come out to my house, thanks for being so chill.  Only a couple glasses got smashed.  Stoked.  The house was cleaned in 2 hours the next day.  Thanks for also leaving when I politely asked everyone to leave.

For the girl that lives behind us.. I don't care that max takes a shi*t in your lawn.  I hope he takes a shi*t in your lawn every day.  And if I find you in my kitchen at 2:30am again I'll get max to chase you home.

****

Important... Garfs party tonight and a huge one on the 11th... Snowboard.com is throwing a party.  Hope to see everyone out.

The Life and Times of Joe: Crap
By: joe

I was tired and took the greyhound up from Vancouver to Whistler this morning, I was near the front of the bus, and as I got off I got rushed by some people behind me, so I forgot to scan the seat to see if I left anything behind (something I do every time). So of course, this was the time that I left my fancy phone on the bus. I went back 2 minutes later and talked to the Greyhound lady, she said they'd have to wait for the bus to get to pemberton before they could check it. I'm going to guess that whoever took it got off in the village.

Anyway, I reaaaaly hope I can get it back, cause I'd not be stoked on having to get another one. Argh. I hate it when I leave things behind. I hate it even more when I know EXACTLY where I left it and it wasn't there when someone looked for it.

Oh yeah and I've been wearing the same clothes for 3 days now, I feel great.

After taking the last couple years off, I'm getting back into the scene.  This year I picked up some new sponsors and I'm stoked about representing them.  Go check 'em out for yourself.

SMX Optics (Steelmx.com) - A super sweet eyewear company that makes gogs for motorcross and snowsports.  Check out their website and see for yourself.

Churchill Distributors (1churchill.com) - These guys represent three clothing companies: Die Faster, Volition, Escera.  They have some great designs and they are super cool people to work with.

Moment Skis (Momentskis.com) - A fresh, new ski company out of Tahoe.  Not only am I stoked on the quality of their skis, they have some sick graphics as well.  I'm still finalizing this one but it looks like I'll be doing some R&D and representing.

MSP has outdone themselves yet again with the latest add to their repertoire, “Push”. I don’t know about you, but I have a love-hate relationship with this time of year. Some of the sickest video premiers roll into town from some of the most amazing production companies. It’s this time of year when every morning when you’re out the door you’re debating whether you should bust out your new jacket already or if its too early, all the while thinking to yourself, “Nah, it’ll get warm later this afternoon”… but you bring it anyway. It’s this time of year when temperatures drop and the first snowfall across the country teases us intermittently… then the next week it feels like the summer again. This time of year, all your friends and industry folk alike amass in one place to share the one undying passion for the VP. That’s the love.

On Friday, September 29, 2006, Seattle, Washington was lucky enough to experience an evening of emotional highs from what can easily be dubbed as one of the season’s most epic films. I hadn’t even seen the trailer, and all I was going off of was friends saying, “Oh dude, I know some guy in a different time zone who just got out and said it was siiiiick”. Yeah, thanks. Anyhow, Fremont Studios was gracious enough to open its doors and roll out the red carpet for an evening of what I was soon to find out to be a night of awesomeness. Pre-show, the mood was super chill, people slowly started to trickle in as the doors opened. I actually looked away for a bit, then turned the corner and all of a sudden, mobs! Lines ceased to mean anything and everyone was so stoked to get inside. How can you blame them? Ingrid Backstrom herself was present and accounted for signing autographs and kickin’ it with co-star Sammy Carlson. Eric Pollard? Don’t think that I wasn’t keeping my eyes open for the Line Team Shredder, but he was no where to be seen that night except for on the screen droppin’ it hot as usual.

I don’t need to sit here and tell you how rad the flick was. Okay, it was sick. Before you run out to buy it though, I’ll giver a go at ranting about the After Party. Following the movie, I was swept away with the masses as we took a short trek down the street to the nerve center of evo (www.evogear.com) a Seattle based retail and online lifestyle and apparel shop. So at this point, we’ve got a mob of stoked skiers, an open bar, Vancouver Hip Hop legends Sweatshop Union, and well, you guessed it, from there the night transitions to non-stop ski talk, break battles, pulling out all the stops , and 6 empty kegs… and that was only night 2 of a 3 night movie weekend for evo! Let the pictures do the talking!

by Molly Hawkins, part of the evo crew!

Rossland, BC-Red Mountain Resort announced its dates for the 2007 Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships to be held January 6th-15th at Western Canada’s oldest ski resort, featuring over 100 of the world’s best freeskiers. The weeklong event carries a cash purse of $10,000 for the competitors that best tame the steep, chutes of Mount Roberts, one of Red’s five mountain peaks.

“We are really stoked to host this event for the 6th consecutive season, making this Canada’s longest running and most legendary Open big mountain competition. Red welcomes athletes, sponsors and media to Rossland, to enjoy our mountain hospitality and a superb competition on our world-class terrain”, states VP of Sales and Marketing Erik Kalacis. “For spectators, Mount Roberts is an ideal setting to view these unbelievably talented athletes. The competition, the skiing and the after-parties will surely deliver a highly entertaining event.”

The format of the competition will follow IFSA Big Mountain Freeskiing guidelines, which dictates that participants ski the mountain creatively, unrestricted by gates or formal course layouts, while they take aggressive lines and make big drops on Roberts’ varied and challenging terrain. Judges of the championship will evaluate skiers on five categories – line choice, fluidity, technique, aggression, and control. Jeff Holden, head judge of the competition last year, returns to lead his team of judges for another year.

Event Schedule:

Date Event & Location
Saturday Jan. 6th, 2007 Junior Event, Ages 12-17, Lynx Line
Thursday Jan. 11th, 2007 Open Qualifier, Ages 18+, Lynx Line
Friday Jan. 12th, 2007 Semi-Finals, Mount Roberts
Saturday Jan. 13th, 2007 Finals, Mount Roberts, Awards Ceremony
Sunday Jan. 14th, 2007 Weather Contingency Day

Registration is open to skiers 18 years and older. On January 11th, contestants will begin qualification on the mountain’s most difficult in-bounds run, Lynx Line, in order to secure one of the 50 sought-after semifinal slots. Finalists will compete the following two days on backcountry and technical Mount Roberts, adjacent to the resort, before winners are announced on January 15th.

New last season and returning due to its unbelievable popularity and turnout is the Junior event for kids ages 12-17. Held on Lynx Line underneath the Motherlode Chair, youths will participate in a one-day event on January 6th. Teams from as far away as Utah and Vermont have signed up to test their skills on some of the most challenging terrain in the region against the newest “up and comers” from the Kootenays.

Registration forms and more information on the 6th annual Canadian Open Freeskiing Championships will be available after October 1st by logging on to www.redresort.com

My Journal: stoked
By: galaxie420

right, i'm pretty stoked about a few things today....

first off, it's day 5 without cigarrettes- AND i've found that i can still drink! mixed drinks are the key.  i went out to the pub and had a panty dropper- tastes just like pink lemonade- actually, i had 3 and a shot of kool-aid- all liquor, but tastes just like kool-aid.  pretty cool- didn't have to go running out for a ciggy.

plus, i'm going camping with shortbus this weekend.  we're going out to franconia notch in new hampshire.  can't wait- one of the two weekends this summer that i'll have spending money.

lastly, the nervous butterflies in my stomach about spending so much on yet another trip to england are gone- got a good price on the airline ticket and my plan to save is right on target.  lol so i can relax a little now.  can't wait to get there- fly out of logan airport on sept. 26th  woohoo!

September 2006 update:
From this portion I wrote about several months ago, it just doesn't seem as exicting anymore.. I mean, after wakeboarding all summer, now with a couple of jetskis to play with, this riverboarding thing just isn't quite the turn on it was when I wrote about it.

Riverboarding..

I've found a new activity online that looks like fun, "Riverboarding". It's not as exciting as wakeboarding or snowboarding, but a feasible activity seeing how it's a 2 minute walk from the river where I live. Here's a pic (from a web site, not me or anyone I know):
Riverboardingpic.jpg
As for the website and location of pic above, it's http://www.bansheeriverboards.com/

They show it with a skimboard, though I was thinking of perhaps a wakeskate instead if I could find one cheap. For the off season months and when not able to wakeboard, this seems like a fun way to practice balance and very simple stuff, especially given the convenient location where I live.

The way I found out about this little activity was when I was doing some online searching. From my years of growing up in California, I have an old boogie board that I was trying to figure out a use for, as there is no ocean within a reasonable distance when living here in the northwest. I thought of donning my drysuit, and taking a ride down the river face first on the old boogie board. Only thing about that is I'd have to figure a way to carry my cell phone on me to get picked up from a ride home. Sucks having do everything alone most of the time - I can't ever seem to find anyone(local) that shares my same sense of adventure. Now to see if I can find a bungee cord and do a makeshift setup. Since bills are a reality, I just don't have the money for everything. My fun, toys, etc is the result of hard work, saving up, bicycling instead of driving to save gas, not eating out and having a taste for top ramen, etc.

One more week:
One week from now I go to wakeboard camp! I am so mega stoked!!! After saving for a very long time for vacation, this is what I badly wanted to do. I expect it will be an awesome time.  Obviously as demonstrated by the river ideas above, I'm bored much of the time UNLESS I'm doing something with action and is fun. To me, the BORINGIST friggen type of people are those who want to sit around at a coffee house or whatever and do nothing. Sure, that sort of thing has its place--- like after a sweet day of play, but not as a primary activity.

. When I'm bored and not doing anything, I get flat out depressed and wish my life would end. Biking is okay and keeps me in shape. Trail riding on the dirt bike is fun but another thing I rarely have anyone to go with and trail riding deep into the woods really isn't the best idea sometimes. I spend the rest of the time bicycling; at the very least it saves a lot in gas money with the ongoing increasing pump prices. How's this for someone who needs a life(but the truth); I hate being bored so much that I would rather to go work than sit at home and do nothing!

So I've broken my share of bones, etc., but honestly, I'd rather be in several pieces than sit on my butt and never have tried. I think the same would be said of most other snowboarders here too though.
