Winner to Surf Out of Whistler Festival in a Brand New Pontiac Wave

Photo of 2007 Pontiac Wave 5-door

If winning a free trip to Whistler for the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is the ultimate heist, then Pontiac is providing the gilt-edge to the experience, offering a Pontiac Wave to the winner of the Ride the Wave contest.

The Pontiac Ride the Wave contest launched this week with radio and web promotions across Canada. Five finalists will enter the Wave on the afternoon of Saturday April 14th and test their mettle in the barrel of the car over 10 days, in order to decide if they are worthy of the ultimate break.

The five contestants will get to Ride The Wave, and the swell of cabin fever, in the ultimate survivor game.

The rules are simple:

Outlast and outwit 4 other strangers living in the car.

Bail, and you’re out.

Win one of the many challenges, and your immunity might garner you a leave pass for the night to attend one of the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s epic afterdark events.

Can you stick it, all the way to the shore? That’s the ultimate test.

The reward? You go home in a brand new Pontiac Wave.

Aspiring Wave-riders are invited to enter online at www.whistler2007.com/2007/contests < http://www.whistler2007.com/2007/contests >

ATHLETES HAVE UNTIL MARCH 8 TO THROW THEIR NAME IN THE RUNNING FOR A SPOT IN THE WHISTLER COMPETITIONS

TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s Canadian MVP will win inaugural Pontiac Peak Performer Award and a hot new ride

WHISTLER, BC, February 23 2007 –

For 10 days in April, skiers & snowboarders will gather for five competitions and the classic end to an incredible season in Whistler.

Snowboarders and skiers will again join forces for the 2007 TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, with the Old Spice World Snowboarding Classic and the World Skiing Invitational taking place simultaneously April 12 - 21.

Over 150 riders and skiers will take on the Stompede, Rail Session, Superpipe and TWO Big Air competitions throughout the festival week. In addition to $100,000 in cash & prizes on the line, athletes will be motivated to go big by the opportunity to win the inaugural Pontiac Peak Perfomer Award and the keys to a brand new Pontiac G5 GT.

The Canadian skier or rider who out-spins, out-jumps and out-grinds their competitors across four events and receives the most votes at the on-site Pontiac display will receive the Peak Performer award and will squeal out of town in a slick, black Pontiac G5 GT after the April 21 Big Air.

A newly introduced lottery format will give the opportunity for emerging athletes to secure a spot in the World Skiing Invitational and Old Spice World Snowboarding Classic competitions, so fresh contenders can mix it up with established pros and previous champions.

Athlete Manager Lindsay O’Brien said, “Uniting pros and amateurs through a mixture of invitational and open fields makes the festival an event for all levels of riders.  It provides an exciting opportunity for up & comers to size up their skills against the pros and help to launch their competitive careers and have a ton of fun in the process.”

Between now and March 8, athletes can go to www.whistler2007.com to request an invitation or enter the lottery.  Confirmed competitor lists will be announced on March 12.

LOS ANGELES - ESPN Winter X Games 11 announces new sports, new athletes and more coverage going into the eleventh annual event. In addition to Skiing and Snowboard and ESPN‚s announcement last month of Snowmobile Freestyle being added to the sports lineup, Winter X Games 11 will include its first ever disabled discipline, Mono Skier X. First introduced as a demo event at Winter X Games Nine, this year‚s event will be modeled after Winter X mainstays, Skier X and Snowboarder X. It will feature the top 16 disabled men and women racing in individual sit-skis in heats of four. Snowboarding will add the discipline of Snowboard Best Trick Showdown, and Moto X will not be in the Winter X Games lineup but remain a pillar in summer and international events. Fifteen hours of live programming on ESPN and ABC will be offered as well as Winter X Games 11 coverage on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360, SportsCenter and ESPN2‚s X Center.

“As we move into the eleventh Winter X Games, we couldn‚t be more excited with our lineup of sports and the new group of athletes we have participating with Snowmobile Freestyle and Mono Skier X,” said Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment. “We are dedicated to bringing a variety of original and compelling content to the sports fans and confident with these sport additions we will do so at Winter X Games 11.”

The annual Winter X Games is the premier action winter sports event in the world and showcases more than 250 of the world‚s top athletes including 28 Olympians who competed in last year‚s Winter X Games 10 prior to traveling to Turin, Italy. In addition to Snowboard SuperPipe (added in 1998), the Olympics added Snowboard Boardercross an event that has been part of Winter X Games since the beginning. Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Skicross, known as Skier X in the Winter X Games, would be added to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Skier X was introduced to Winter X Games in 1998 with 30 competitors and was the first competition of its kind for the sport of skiing.

Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen/ Snowmass will continue to host the Winter X Games through 2010. Winter X Games 11 is scheduled for Jan 25-28, 2007 with free entrance to the public.

Voting, like throwing your first 360, getting first chair, or making out in the gondy, is a rite of passage. Unfortunately, casting a ballot in America today usually amounts to selecting the person you dislike the least.

Luckily, there’s the 2007 Powder Reader Poll, where we ask our reading faithful to vote for their favorite skiers. It’s your chance to tell us who you think represents the best of our sport. It’s a positively joyous experience! No annoying campaign ads, no standing in line, and no confusion with those old hags at the voting precinct.

So stand up and be heard. From now until January 1, 2007, you can cast your vote for the 10 male and five female skiers you believe to be the best of the best. Just type in a name to make your selection.

Winners will be announced at the Seventh Annual Powder Video and Reader Poll awards show in Aspen, Colorado, on January 27.

The top action sports performances of the year will be honored at the inaugural Arby’s® Action Sports Awards presented by FUEL TV, airing nationally on FOX, Sunday, December 10. The ceremony will bring together the biggest names in skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, freestyle motocross and more along with dozens of celebrities from across the entertainment spectrum for one star-studded, high-flying show!

FMX star Travis Pastrana received four nominations following his double backflip performance at this summer’s X Games. Jamie Bestwick, one of the top BMX vert riders in the world, also received four nominations. Shaun White is up for three awards coming off his Olympic Gold Medal and Winter X Games Gold Medal snowboard runs. Lindsey Jacobellis contends for Female Snowboarder of the Year with fellow Olympians Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler. The competition continues out of the water for surfers Andy and Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Sofia Mulanovich, Rochelle Ballard and Chelsea Georgeson, among other top pros.

“Being nominated for one award would be special, but four awards is truly unbelievable,” said Pastrana. “I’ve had just an amazing year and to be recognized by the industry is an honor.”

Winners will be determined by the combination of fan balloting and a panel of expert judges, then announced during taped ceremonies on November 30. FOX will air the show nationally on December 10, at 2:30 PM ET/PT or 4:30 PM ET/PT either preceding or following local NFL coverage that afternoon (check local listings). FUEL TV, the only 24/7 network dedicated to the lifestyle of action sports, is hosting online voting now for fans and viewers at www.fuel.tv.

"FOX Sports is happy to be working in conjunction with our brethren at FUEL to bring the Arby's Action Sports Awards to the entire country," said FOX Sports President Ed Goren. "Action sports are growing in popularity every year, and this show highlights the best of the best."

The Arby’s Action Sports Awards is produced by Future Mainstream Productions and the award-winning team of Bob Bain and Mike Burg, veterans of such events as the "Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards" and the "Teen Choice Awards." FUEL TV is supporting the event with its signature red carpet series "Blue Carpet Special," a special preview show premiering November 6, and will re-telecast the Arby’s Action Sports Awards throughout December.

"The growth and popularity of action sports is at an all-time high and it is time to honor such amazing feats as Shaun White’s Olympic Gold Medal and Travis Pastrana’s double backflip at the X Games," said Bain. "Not only do children aspire to be the next Pastrana or White, but the music and entertainment industries have a true affinity for these sports, so we look forward to putting together a memorable event for viewers."

Arby’s has signed on to be the presenting sponsor and other major sponsors include Jeep®, Activision and Nike. "Through this event, we’ve been able to create an unprecedented integrated marketing platform to reach the highly sought-after male 14-34 demo in the fourth quarter," said Burg. "For a creative and aggressive marketer, the opportunities to work with the show are endless"

"This was a fantastic opportunity for us to partner with a brand new awards program that recognizes young athletes for extraordinary talents," said Debra Mager, Senior Vice President of National Advertising, Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc. "These kids take risks and excel at being different, which is something we at Arby’s have always prided ourselves on."

A panel of industry experts nominated the top athletes in 20 different categories. Many of the awards are sport and gender specific such as Skateboarder of the Year (male and female) and FMX Rider of the Year. Achievements that transcend the genre have been nominated in categories such as Rider of the Year, Huevos Grande and Performance of the Year.

so i know what you were thinking... k-fed and britney were forever... mmm hmmmm.  right.  pretty sure that helen keller would have been able to see a divorce coming in that one.  i'm not one to really care about celebrity gossip, but i just find most of britney's life to leave me with this morbid curiosity... like passing a train wreck.. i just have to look in to see just how bad it is.

now, kevin, to his credit.. managed to not only hook up with, but marry (therefore mooch) off of one of the top pop idols.. well... in history really.  that is one hell of an acomplishment for a no talent, fugly dancer who has no command of the english language.  good for you!  that is damn impressive.  even though he signed a pre-nup, he will be entitled to half their place plus some extra stuff.. totaling about 3.9 million.  not bad k-fed... not bad at all.  just don't go spending all that chedda on releasing a follow up rap album.  i don't think the 200 people who bought your last album will carry over and somehow make it profitable.

as for britney... smart move on the prenup... but still.. have you seen this guy?  he makes a squeegee kid look like a CEO of a fortune 500 company.  this is a guy who ditched his pregnant girlfriend to marry you.  to me.. that might be a bad start.  and i have to tell you... letting a guy know that its over via text message?  that is allllll class.  i really really hope that she used some emoticons there... through in a :( or even better... ROTFL...

so heres to hollywoods top couple... umm... well, i've heard them called that.  i don't really care in the least.  but yeah... we should start a poll regarding just how messed up their two kids are gonna be... bad enough just having a combonation of genes from those two... but having to put up with the media circus?  yikes.  good luck with that one.

    IMPORTANT FREESKIING ATHLETE INFORMATION

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2007 Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series & Freeskiing World Tour Athlete Information

    -EVENT SCHEDULE

    -NEW EVENT & REGISTRATION POLICIES

    -PRE-QUALIFIED ATHLETE LIST

    TO ALL ATHLETES:

Winter is fast approaching and that means so is competition season. After a hugely successful tour in 2006, MSI has decided to grow the Subaru U.S. Freesking Series by adding a fifth event. With the new event and expanded programs, such as same-day video, photo, and story coverage, 2007 is set to be the best year yet.

Registration for all events in the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series will begin on:

    November 1, 2006.

To register, please log onto www.usfreeskiing.com. To guarantee entry, athletes interested in competing—including World Tour IFSA pre-qualified athletes (see list below)—must register prior to the event and pay in full to be considered officially registered. A partial payment/deposit, will NOT secure you a spot. As always, entries are limited and events sell out within days, so we urge you to register early to avoid disappointment.

On the first morning of each event all athletes must check in at registration and sign waivers, purchase lift tickets, and receive bibs and start order. As a reminder, IFSA (International Freeskiers Association) memberships ARE REQUIRED for all athletes competing in the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Tour and Freeskiing World Tour. Please go to www.freeskiers.org to sign up. We are working to add a link from usfreeskiing.com to register for membership.

Due to the popularity of the Snowbird and Kirkwood World Tour Qualifiers, the qualifier run has been extended to a two-day event, with each athlete still only getting one run to qualify. This will increase the amount of athletes who are given the chance to qualify for the World Tour event.

Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: $25,000 for Ullr Girl Contest!!!
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

If you haven't heard already, we've got a pretty HUGE CONTEST going this year that lots of snowboard.com'ers and freeskiing.com'ers stand a huge chance of winning. The girls, that is. The guys can vote and get entered for a trip to whistler to judge the contest! Here's the official dirt below, and with the colonies friends and community on your side, you've got a huge advantage. Who's gonna take it...
Read the details below or get it all at our mini site - ifullrwasagirl.com

Whistler Blackcomb has kicked off “If Ullr Was A Girl”, the first contest of its kind, offering a huge prize purse of $25,000 for a female skier or snowboarder who’s crowned Ullr Girl. The contest officially began September 1st with Whistler Blackcomb’s launch of the contest’s voting microsite ifullrwasagirl.com.

In old Scandinavian myth, Ullr was the god of justice and dueling, but was most well known for his beauty and mastery of skiing. Every winter, Whistler invokes the favour of Ullr with a huge party involving the ritual of burning skis and boards in hopes of epic snowfall that winter. Legend has it that as the god of all things ridden on snow, Ullr was not only a kick-ass rider, but had the passion, confidence and attitude befitting a Norse god as well. Although Ullr is cast as a male in ancient myth, Whistler Blackcomb began wondering, what if Ullr was a girl? What would she be like? What would it take to find her? The “If Ullr Was A Girl” contest will provide those answers.

The search for Whistler Blackcomb’s Ullr Girl launches with a wide net being cast across North America in search of the ultimate mountain girl - someone with a passion for skiing and snowboarding that can rip it up on and off the slopes.

“This contest is designed to celebrate women whose lives and passions revolve around snowsports and who embody mountain culture, to provide them with a venue to showcase their talents to the world, and to reward them significantly for what they do and believe in every day,” says Christy Allan, Whistler Blackcomb’s General Manager of Marketing. “Whistler already enjoys the benefits of having some of the best skiers and riders in the world training and playing on our doorstep. This contest will help us to connect with even more female athletes, celebrate their love of snowsports, and discover that ultimate mountain girl.”

Women are invited to enter in two categories to win the Ullr Girl title – an Open category which includes all pro athletes, and an Amateur category. The contest will culminate at Whistler’s 2007 TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival (TWSSF), April 13-22, where the athlete in the Open category who best demonstrates her world class athleticism and embodiment of Whistler’s mountain culture is awarded a grand prize of $25,000. Amateurs will vie for their own Ullr Girl prize package which includes a professional photo shoot, inclusion in a Matchstick Productions’ or Misschief Films DVD, a new gear set up and a Whistler Blackcomb season pass. Whistler Blackcomb will award the grand prizes after the votes accumulated through ifullrwasagirl.com are in, and all finalists compete in a series of events at the TWSSF in Whistler.

Ifullrwasagirl.com will host the first portion of the contest where athletes are already posting their bios, photos and videos in order to vie for the votes of site visitors from around the world. Three Open athletes and three Amateur athletes with the most votes by February 19, 2007 will each win a 7-day, 6 night trip to Whistler during the TWSSF to compete in the finals. Site visitors voting on ifullrwasagirl.com can also enter to win a trip to Whistler to be one of the judges for the finals.

In addition to the voted-in athletes in the Open category, additional pro skiers and snowboarders will be chosen by an athlete selection committee to compete in the finals. The additional athletes chosen will round out the Open category up to a maximum of 8 skiers and 8 snowboarders. All invited Open athletes will be chosen from the online profiles on ifullrwasagirl.com, making participation in the website a requirement for an invitation to the finals in Whistler.

The Ullr Girl finals for both Open and Amateur categories will consist of the following four event components:
  1. A big mountain competition which will be held in-bounds on Whistler Blackcomb
  2. A parks and pipe competition (exact format to be announced)
  3. An arts component based on the TWSSF events. Each athlete will be asked to pick an art form – for example photography, film, art, or music – to present during a special evening event at the TWSSF.
  4. Votes on ifullrwasagirl.com. Votes for the final selection will refresh on March 1st with skiers and snowboarders starting with a clean slate.

During the on-mountain events, skiers and snowboarders will be judged by different judging panels and ranked separately. All four event categories will carry equal weight and the finalists will be awarded points for their ranking in each event. The grand prize winners in the Open category and the Amateur category will be the two athletes who accumulate the most points after all four categories are totaled.

Full contest information and rules, as well as details on posting an athlete profile, nominating a girl, voting, or applying to be a judge, are available on-line at ifullrwasagirl.com

Wanaka teenager and rising ski star Jossi Wells proved he is up there with the world’s best after taking first place in the slopestyle event at the NZ Free Ski Open today at Snow Park NZ.

Canadian Kaya Turski, who is also a pro rollerblader, picked up the winning title for the women’s slopestyle event. Wells (16), who is now New Zealand’s top freestyle skier, displayed an outstanding performance at today’s event, including a switch 720 double nose grab (rotating twice and holding onto the front tips of his skis before landing), a switch 630 (rotating one-and-three-quarter times) before landing successfully on the rail, as well as a switch 1080 (three rotations). “Everything he did was so smooth and so easy. Jossi’s improved so much this year. Last year, he was good, but he didn’t quite have the tricks to take out the big guns. But now, he’s proved he’s one of the world’s best,” Open head judge Jake McCleary said. Wells said his winning run was one of the best he’d ever had. “I’m aiming for the world scene, and this definitely a great competition with lots of international riders. Every little step counts.” Turski (18), has been freestyle skiing for a year-and-a-half. Her winning run included a cork 540 mute grab (spinning one-and-a-half times off axis, grabbing the front of one ski with the opposite hand). She also successfully pulled off a switch 900 (rotating two-and-a-half times) and attempted a switch 1080 - a world-first in women’s free skiing, but unfortunately her ski came off on landing.  “The standard of competition was unbelievable – we were blown away with today’s event. Competitors were all throwing down as hard as they could,” McCleary said. The slopestyle course, designed by Snow Park NZ slopes manager Frank Wells, began with a quarterpipe-style drop-in, down to a custom Snow Park NZ stair feature. Skiers then approached a gap-to-snow box, before moving to a 14m jump, followed by an 18m jump. They completed the course by hitting a flat-down rail and a jump-to-down box, which is the latest craze in free skiing slopestyle and makes for spectacular tricks, such as 900 and 1080 rotations. The NZ Free Ski Open is the southern hemisphere’s largest event of its kind. With park and pipe events now completed, the next stage of the competition the Volkl Big Mountain prelims, which take place at Treble Cone on Friday August 18. The finals will be held at Treble Cone on the first following fine weather day.
