School is back. It makes the itch for the white stuff so much worse.
I just ordered new skis, and they will be here in about two weeks, and I've
already stripped the bindings off my old skis, and starting planning out what I wanna
get stomped this year.

This is pathetic.
I need snow.

A Snowboarder's Love Story, AAAAAAAAHHHHH!: How it all came to be
By: SnoRide.com

Mid-September 2006-  Well, we had our first snow up on Mission Ridge!  It has stayed for a couple days.  Enough to give Snoride and I the "itch" to dust our boards off and make sure our equipment is in working order.
Driving the kids to school this morning, I looked up at the mountain and noticed the rain had melted it all away.  That's okay, its still early.

I'm glad my first Blog got such a good response and that many enjoyed it!! I hope you enjoy this one too.

This is my story about how I got caught up in snowboarding.

Last Season was my first year on a snowboard(2005).  I had run into an ol' aquaintance on a bike loop trail that circles a ten mile portion of the Columbia River here in Wenatchee. I hadn't seen him a couple of years.  We used to work together at a nursing home and after he left there, we lost touch.  We just happened to cross paths that day and did a little catching up in the middle of his work-out.  He let me know that he had started a band with some friends and I filled him in on my mom passing away from liver cancer.  Matt really liked my mom and was sad to hear she had passed away.  So, he invited me to come to the Emerald Station restaurant to listen GSG perform, thinking that it could cheer me up.
Saturday arrived, I was supposed to have a date, but the dude "stood me up".  So, I went anyway!
Walking through the back door of the bar, I felt my nerves kicking in.  I had never been in a bar by myself before.  I saw Matt across the room at the stage tuning his guitar.  Its hard to mistake Matt for someone else, he is 6'4", has long sandy blond hair pulled back in a single braid, wears small wire framed glasses and is quite handsome.
I could tell he was busy, so I sat at the bar and ordered a Heffeweizen beer with lemon and tried to act like I knew what I was doing.  Matt spotted me and came over to the bar, gave me a hug, and invited me to sit at the band's table in front of the stage.  There I met the band members: Randy, the bass player; Eric, the drummer; and Jay, the lead guitarist.  And other friends of the group.
GSG played that night and rocked the joint!!  Amazingly talented musicians.  It definately cheered me up and made me realize I needed to "let loose" more often.  The pitchers of beer at the table helped out too!
AAAAAAH!!  All good things come to an end right???  Not necessarily!!

Next up on the stage was a rapper called A-Bomb.  I don't care for rap much but this guy could tell a story.
Another one of Matt's friends joined us at our table.  He sat right next to me and introduced himself as Bob.  I returned the introduction and carried on watching A-Bomb.  We chatted a little about how A-Bomb rapped with his back facing the audience.  Kinda strange, but it "broke the ice" for Bob and I.  My beer glass kept filling itself, mysteriously and then Bob tries a "come on" line, "Do you snowboard?"
Well, as you already know, at the time, I didn't snowboard.
Bob explained that he and Matt are ski/snowboard instructors at the Ridge.  "Matt and I could teach you how, you should try it!"  Snowboarding sounded like fun and alot of the people at our table, turns out, were snowboarders also.  Seriously, I've never met people as fun-loving and friendly as this bunch!  By the end of the night I was feeling quite comfortable around Bob and some-how, mysteriously (to this day even), we ended up holding hands and sitting even closer to each other.
Throughout the next couple of weeks Bob and I ran into each other at different parties.  We hit it off very quickly and soon were inseperable!!  He moved in with me and my three girls a month later.
Summer passed quickly.  Fall was growing colder and Bob was starting to act a little peculiar.  He set up a makeshift table in the backyard and plugged in a funky smelling old iron he used for hot waxing his snowboard and skis.  I watched Bob from the back window in confusion, then looked up at Mission Ridge Resort from my backyard and noticed, There wasn't any snow up there!  I went outside to ask him what he was doing.  Bob replied, "I can smell Winter in the air and its time to get ready for another season on the Hill."  I watched him for a bit with interest and even tried to wax a snowboard myself.  Bob taught me the different parts of the board and this gave me an "Official" feeling.  I felt that now, even though I had never been on a board, that I could relate a little more to these other riders, that I was now calling my friends.  It snowed about  a week later on the Ridge.
Matt invited us over to his house for a "ski burning" party in preperation for an abundant snow year. So, Bob and I attend and all the while, I'm thinking "these guys are weird and really different from anyone I've ever met, I LIKE IT!"  So far, I've learned that these snowboarders are an open-minded, super-friendly bunch and are always ready to throw a party for any reason pertaining to snow!!
Well, that ski burning party really brought on some good snow.  By December 5th, Mission Ridge was open!!  Again, I felt my nerves kicking in.. By now, I've purchased my "First Turns Package", which includes 3 lessons, boots, bindings, board rentals and a Season's Pass.  Oh shi*t!!  I'm committed now!
A WORD OF WISDOM for ya'all.  Rule #1- Don't let your boyfriend/girlfriend teach you to snowboard!!  Your relationship will go down the "crapper".  Bob knew this, so I had a different instructor teach me.  Its a good thing, cause I would have had his head chewed off by the end of that first day!  I really had to control my frustrations around my first day instructor. But I think he sensed my frustration when, after the lesson, I threw my board into the frickin' trashcan next to Sports Learning Center!!  No, I didn't do that!  But I sure felt like it!  What a day I'll never forget.  I was totally sure that I was a hopeless case.
Now I can look back and I'm sooooooooooo glad I didn't give up!!  Because the more I tried and the more practice I put in, the more I improved and the confidence I gained in myself and my board.
This concludes my story on how snowboarding "caught" me.   I'll BE BACK!!

My Albino corydora died, but that's how it goes. While feeding them worms about 3-4 weeks ago, all the fish swam to the top to eat them, but the betta accidentally mistook my albino for food and took an accidental nip. He had a scab that I thought was healing, but he appears to have succommed to his injury.  After that, I decided I needed to replace him and have a nicely stocked tank now.  One of the strange creatures I got is "upsidedown catfish". He's the strangest thing I've ever seen swim.  Looks kinda like the pic below -- and he swims upside down.

I also got a new corydora(catfish) that has the same coloring and looks like this:
Then picked up some platys..
One of the platy's is very obvious pregnant and will probably have babies any day now. Since the betta will probably have a yummy live meal, I put some breeder grass in the tank to at least give the babies a fighting chance, though I suspect they will become dinner.

Since wrist surgery is coming up in a couple of weeks, I've been getting as much work done as I can and also getting in all the wakeboarding I can every last chance up until the day of. At least I'll have my wet pets to enjoy.

I absolutely love my wakeboard.. a Hypertlite Drive 134 with HL Spin Bindings.. looks like this pic below, but when I get my digital camera replaced I'll post pics of mine with the sticker job

Arm update:
In a previous blog post here I had written about breaking my arm. From what I wrote (based on what I was told before seeing the x-rays, etc) I had said the ulna was broken. Turns out the initial report came from a radiologist who literally is incompetant and it took him more than 3 times to even pass his radiology medical boards (Amazing what a person learns when they work in the medical community). Anyways, it was a fracture of the larger bone in the forearm. The medical terms for it are Colles', transverse, and torus fracture.. all the same thing, just different words for each. I'm thrilled to have the cast(s) off. Started with a white one that didn't even last two days, but mostly my fault. The way it was casted, the part near the fingers interferred with typing (which is my primary bill paying occupation). I was able to adjust to keep the wrist immobilized, but NOT part of my fingers. The hacking and cutting I did on that one really messed it up - my doc saw me on the ski hill two days after she put it on and jokingly said "I'm going to kill you!!" when she saw the shape of the cast. The next day, I got a new one put on - blue and green. That lasted for about 2-2½ weeks before it just wasn't fitting quite right (more swelling going down, minor muscle loss) and was feeling just dirty and icky. The x-rays I have scattered in my profile were taken on 4/11/06, about 3 weeks or so after initial injury. It has only been less than a week since I had my final, purple cast removed. I have SOME limited range of motion. My fingers are very strong, my forearm muscles haven't lost much, but I have some deformity and there is concern about ligamentous tearing. IF my symptoms are not improving after regular physical therapy and TLC over the next two weeks, then we'll be having my insurance buy me an MRI, which knowing my luck, may lead to surgery. Since the distal head of my radius (big bone in forearm) is a matter of millilmeters shorter from impacting, my wrist isn't quite turning correctly, etc. One of a couple possible surgical possibilities would be an ulnar osteotomy (where with the smaller forearm bone, they saw off and remove 1 or 2 mm of bone, then plate it together so I can sport some internal body jewelry like many other riders to correct the alignment for best function, or MRI will tell what kind of ligamentious repair (such as if it is a TFCC and/or DRUJ injury -- if you found my blog while reading info about wrist injuries, just google those two terms to learn more).

I hate cold, yet love riding.. how ironic!
The "cool" thing about riding and skiing is that I'm using energy and become warm. I'm dressed warm while out on the slopes and playing in the snow, so I'm very content. The other things I enjoy are water sports, specifically jetskiing and wakeboarding. Although I need to upgrade my piece of crap wakeboard (bindings are good, but need a better board for progression - so if anyone is interested in my  old CWB that I can't remember the name of off hand, drop me a line and I'll be willing to give a very steal of a deal/negotiate a fair price. Anyways, the local water here in Idaho is best described by one word - COLD. I love the water and evening swimming, but except for august and september when I don nothing less than my sping 2mm wetsuit, it's just too cold for me. I found a solution. After much searching online, found a pretty decent dry suit, brand "Bare Ultra Dry". Not the most steezy, flashy or colorful, but will work for wakeboarding and just screwing around in the water anyways, and not get myself frrozen half to death doing it. If I manage to make it to kiteboarding lessons at the Gorge this summer, then I wil certainly have the most important thing to bring - something to keep me from freezing to death. I've been looking online for the last two months trying to find a drysuit that would fit my short stature and accomodate from my muscle-bound thighs and larger than I would like female hips. Found this one at a site called http://gotriver.com.  If I have enough on my next check, I'll be picking up a balance board... a good indoor training tool for all my chosen board sports

Funny Stuff:
For anyone who reads this, and to entice others to read about more than my general whining, I should start posting up some jokes, pics and other amusing things. I'm always smiling and consider myself to have a sense of humor.. sometimes dry humor, some sick, some mixed in between... but that is what makes me, ME.  I was grinning the first time I found this little cartoon

I went to my mom's house to pick up some things, and surprise surprise - my sister and her boyfriend gave me an early birthday present - 2006 Atomic Hatchet. Very nice I must say, perfect timing too. I was just about to pick up a Rome Solution 158.

hatchet.jpg

Bindings, bindings, bindings... which bindings to get? I've been debating between Drake (Czar or Supersport) and Union (Force or Data). Although Drake has been very reliable in the past, I'm a bit worried about their financial future. With the recent loss of good team riders on their team, it may be an indication of the company's financial direction. As for Union bindings, I've read nothing but good reviews about their products. I guess, it's just a matter of deciding between the Union Force or Union Data...

I wonder which one's more forgiving (softer flex), I'm not interested in a stiff or too responsive of a binding for the Hatchet.

Drop me a line if you have any opinions on which bindings I should get.

Giraffe Entourage: so THATs powder
By: Rodney

After all these years of skiing, I've finally experienced what I would call crazy powder.

Tuesday and Wednesday were great..about 10-20 cm of fresh pow, however, today was CRAZY!.

Well...it wasn't at first.  I got to the hill around 7:50 and when i went to ride down to the chairlift, I couldn't buckle my bindings cuz the damn strap fell off.  The screw must have came off sometime.

So i rode down without an ankle strap only to meet Adam, Kyle, and Clayton.  I went up the chairlift with them hoping that the ski/snowboard repair shop woudl be open so they could fix my binding...but they weren't.

I had to go to the store, and buy screws which luckily fit.  Not perfectly..but a nice temperary fix.

So yea...i missed a few first runs...but it was still phenomenal!!!

I can't stress that enough.  There was about 30-40 cm I would say..but it seemed like atleast 50.  Gotta keep the tip up...or else..DAINJAH.  haha..I had my fill of eating powder.  My back leg tasted like burning by the end.  I cant' beleive how amazing all this powder is on a board.  It felt like Christmas morning!

this was my first season at whistler and all I have to say is that i loved it. even though my season was cut short at the end of april when i fell off a roof drunk after a Garfinkels staff party. so now iam gonna kick back and tell you my story cause iam bored and have nothin else to do.It all begins in november when i moved over from van isl to pursue my dream of being a ski bum.I had new boots and lots of new clothing but my skis and bindings were sh*t. but i skiied hard all through december on them any way. my progress didnt really improve until late december when i bought some new skis and bindings. iam a tele skier who normaly buys downhill skis and mounts tele bindings but this time i went with a tele ski. the new bindings were different than most tele bindings so i was couriuos to see how they would perfom. and this is where my rise to sheddin hard truly beggins. since there was so little snow all i could do most of the time was shred the park so thats where i improved the most. by the end of jan my switch riding was improving almost by the day and it would soon take me for a ride that i never expected. soon i was landing switch off 40 foot jumps i could ski entire runs linkin switch turns my all out speed and contol was also improving i was on a role.

Just got back home from my Spring Break trip, Colorado was great, got to ski powder for the first time in my life, and this was some nice sh*t.
Downside of the trip was my new bindings broke and i found out all LINE bindings we're doing that. So i had to ski my old skis for 2 days, then i got a pair of look bindings, they hurt your ass when you land.

So today i got to go skiing for the last day of the season (here at least), like 2 weeks till Colorado. i finally got to try out my new skis LINE skis kick ass, and the bindings are awsome too, a bit heavy at first but i got used to em. To bad the park was sh*t today like only 3 rails and not a single kicker, someosnowboarders mad a decent size one but it took em around 3 hours, waaste of time in my opinion. Only saw like 2 other free skiers today, blah.

just got a christmas present a little early, some nice new Volkl Karma's in 169cm, after a long day of skiing on a demo set i decided that it was the ski that i wanted above all the others. my dad taught me how to mount the bindings(never had before) which was pretty cool too. nice new 1080 bindings too!

todays skiing was awesome, pretty cold but not as cold as yesterday(omfg was it cold) just cold enough to keep most of the tourists off the mountain, and luckily no frostbite today. the skis are great they hold a higher speed turn really well and are pretty stable at high carving speeds. fairly light and easy to spin, didn't get to try rails(they're demos; you break em you buy em and who wants to buy broken skis?)

i would reccomend that if anyone gets a chance go out on some Karmas you should like em(hey every is different).

So... I'm off for a week and a bit...

heading to barrie, corbetts still doesn't have my new bindings, so no riding for me. oh well. i'll live. (oh, and dammitj[julie], i bought them with my winnings from the hull casino! damn i'm good!)

then on saturday heading to florida... not much riding there. i'll just bring my goggles and walk around wearing them in the street. see what kind of looks i get. should be interesting.

hope you all have a good week and don't miss me too much. shouldn't be hard.
