Last spring Backcountry Snowcats had the pleasure of hosting the O'Neill Pro team for a week of film and photo work, and of course epic shredding. Guests included none other than the big mountain snowboarding legend Jeremy Jones himself.

Here's a quick clip of a few of the guys, rough-cut so bear with us and listen closely.

CREATIVE STAKES GET HIGHER AS 72 HOUR FILMMAKER SHOWDOWN OFFERS $2000  CASH PURSE IN ADDITION TO PRIZE HAUL

Registration underway for TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s film-making sprint.

Film-making becomes an athletic endeavour at Whistler’s annual 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown. The competition, an integral part of the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s line-up, challenges artists to perform feats of speed, endurance and precision, with the call to shoot, edit and produce a 3-5 minute digital film set within a 100km radius of Whistler in the space of 72 hours.

The 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown traditionally spawns a concentrated burst of creative energy in Whistler. The Muses descend en masse, as 100 filmmaking teams are loosed on the resort and are given free range to blow the budget, burn the midnight oil and storm the house to meet a deadline.

The Gala screening of finalists is the hottest ticket in town, packing the 2000 seat Conference Centre.  Even the unsanctioned Second Cuts screenings sell out. Previous winners have also received significant exposure, including screenings for the Directors Guild of Canada, at the 2003 Squaw Valley Film Festival, and the 2003 World of Comedy International Film Festival in Toronto. Winners from the 5 previous years of the competition can be viewed at www.whistler2007.com.

The winner of the 2007 Best in Show award will pick up $15,000 in prizes including a $2000 cash purse.

The call for participants is now underway, open to anyone who loves to make films - amateurs and professionals, teams or individuals. Teams from California, Montreal, Vancouver and Whistler have already lodged early submissions.  Festival Production Coordinator Lilli Clark says, “The profile of 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown is growing, and it’s earning a reputation globally as a quality film-making event, with professionals and industry-insiders from across the country lining up to take part.”

The exposure for the film-makers is more than just to a packed house at the Gala screening, but will put their work before an A-list panel of reviewers and judges from within the Canadian film industry.

Industry luminaries including Leo nominated writer and director Tara Hungerford; the film, TV and theatre producer who is also behind the monthly Celluloid Social Club, Paul Armstrong; Anthony Vitale from WhiteOut Films and Zaib Shaikh of Little Mosque on the Prairie fame will sit on the review panel to choose the finalists.

Due to the popularity of the Filmmaker Showdown, advance registration is highly recommended. Entries may still be accepted, but not guaranteed, at a meeting required for all participants at the TELUS Conference Centre on Friday April 14 at 9am in Whistler. The deadline for guaranteed entry is April 3rd. The competition begins following the meeting at 10am. You can register your intent to participate and read up about all the filming details at www.whistler2007.com/film/entry.

Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: G TEAM ON B
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

We are very lucky to have 7 dedicated Park groomers on Blackcomb, Marty Gautrey, Oleksander Iskat, Kirby Litzenberger, Jason Josling, Lucas Ouellete & missing from the photos, Tim Austin & Andy Morrison. Marty is the lead hand & Kirby & Andy are our pipe shapers. Our grooming team is the best ever, bringing grooming experience & a Park background to the team. Nothing happens in our parks & pipe without our Groomers who continue to deliver quality building & grooming each night.

The Park staff take care of the hits during the day & the lead hands, Fred Lepage & Eric Gendron, pass on the maintenance & new build requests to Marty & Olex @ the start of their grooming shift. Our Groomers use Pisten Bully snow cats & specifically the Park Bully model. Specialized combing teeth have been added to the Park cat blades for even better ramp shaping when back blading. The Park groomers also use forks which attach to the snow cat blade to move & install the rails. We all owe a huge thank you to our Park groomers on Blackcomb for all their hard work & dedication in bringing you the best Parks & Pipe experience. Here’s a little back ground on our drivers:

Marty Guatrey – Lead hand & grooming the B Park since 1990. Marty started in Lake Louise, made the move to Whistler & has been working in the Parks in winter & Bike Park in the summer. Marty likes working with the younger crew & enjoys skiing what he builds. “I love building jumps. It’s challenging to build & progress with the skiers & snowboarders needs. It’s great to watch people having fun & enjoying my work & I do have a beautiful work environment”.

Oleksander Iskat – Works opposite shifts to Marty & leads the team on Marty’s days off. Olex has been grooming in the Park for 5 years & also has been a key member of the Bike Park in the summer. “I get to build what I want to ride & have the freedom to build an idea. I try to make everything I build as safe as possible. I may not ride the biggest hits but I’m happy to see people progress on our features”.

Jason Josling – 2nd year in the park grooming. J was mostly in the Terrain Garden last season and now grooms the main Nintendo Park & helps out in the Highest Level when needed. “I’m still learning but feel I’m 100% better than last season. My job takes precision, a skilled eye & attention to detail. I try to make everything safe, rideable & fun”.

left to right: Oleksander, Lucas, Kirby, Marty & Jason

Lucas Ouellette – 1st season grooming & worked on the Parks day crew last season. Lucas is mostly in the Terrain Garden but is also working on the secret jib & jump section in the Highest Level Park “I like building stuff & hitting it the next day. It can be lonely @ times yet peaceful inside the snow cat. I crank up the punk rock tunes & build the jumps.”

Kirby Litzenberger – 6 seasons @ Whistler & specifically grooming the super pipe. Kirby took a couple of seasons off but we are stoked that he is back on our pipe team once again. Top riders know when Kirby has cut the pipe, it rides perfect. Kirby built his first pipe in 1988. “It takes vigilance to build the best pipe possible. I want to build & maintain the best pipe. Being rated #2 for pipe is not good enough. Southern Cali is all hype”.

Tim Austin – 2nd year Grooming the Parks & also came from Park day crew. Tim rides what he builds & rides hard. Tim started grooming the Terrain Garden his first season & is now involved in the main Nintendo Park grooming team.

Andy Morrison – Our longest serving groomer with over 16 years of grooming experience, Andy works on the winter & summer Glacier half pipes. Andy has been pipe shaping for over 5 years & has used the Pipe Dragon & the Zaugg Pipe shapers.

"Basic Thugonomics"
by: John Cena

So, you think you're untouchable?

[Chorus (scratched) x2:]
Word life--this is Basic Thugonomics
Word life--I'm untouchable but I'm forcin' you to feel me

Whether fightin' or spittin' my discipline is unforgiven
Got you backin' up in a defensive position
An ass-kcikin' anthem, heavyweight or bantam
Holdin' camps for ransom, the microphone phantom
Teams hit the floor this the new fight joint
Like a broken needle kid you missin' the point
We dominate your conference with offense, that's no nonsense
My theme song hits, get you reinforcements
We strike quick with hard kicks, duckin' night sticks
Bare-knuckled men through fight pits, beat you lifeless
Never survive this, you forgot like Alzhmiers
Two-face rappers walk away with four shiners
The raw rhymer, turnin' legends to old-timers
My incisors like a vipor bitin' through your one-liners
New DeadMan Inc., and we about to make you famous
Takin' over Earth and still kickin' in Uranus

[Chorus]

You ain't advanced enough to process, potential for medical concepts
Some objects are foreign, like Loch Ness
Arts and sex are complex regardless of your finesse or fitness is the condition of business
Your lame vision of a underground physical image
You're underneath to undermine your whole typical image
With the precision of percentages and the collision of sentences
Poetry beats your mics
We untouchable like righteous sluts with no crevasses
Streets unite, we rock righter with dumber beats
You cats couldn't come this hot ? in the summer heat
Forget two takes--kill your birds the first time
You better stay worthy of my filler of worse rhymes
I'm better than nice, check the veterans twice
You be beside your self with fear
I'll kill you and bury you twice despite the cover of night
Trackin' ya flight like guerrilla warfare
When the grass is dense
Approaching me is a quick way to get referred to in the past tense
Dead-da, when the lights, the mic is on
The crowd is dead like intermission and you on the Titan Tron

Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: So Much SNOW
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

Whistler is having on of the best seasons ever! Endless fresh snow keeps falling (27+ feet and still counting) and we are well over a 3 meter base now.

Yep, that's a rail.

The fresh pow makes for epic riding but is actually slowing down the Parks expansion as we have to continuously dig out the rails, features & rebuild the park almost weekly! The park staff do their best to clear off snow on the rails & hits so our park riders can still hit the features each day. At night, our park groomers are plowing the snow off, rebuilding table tops and rail platforms.

Huge thanx to the day & night Parks team for making the effort each day to offer you the best park riding experience. Fences buried to the top & waist to chest deep drifts around the rails is giving the Parks team a work out almost every day.

Maybe the on line contest www.ifullrwasagirl.com is causing Ullr to be vengeful with the all the snow this season!?

So if you’re up here and in the park, enjoy it, and props to the team for keeping it in shape. If you’re up here and out of the park, well, you know how good it is, we don’t need to remind you. And if you're not here, well, you know what to do...

ARC’TERYX and Whistler Blackcomb will present the inaugural Deep Winter Photo Challenge January 3 through 6, 2007. The contest celebrates the typical January weather systems that pelt the majestic Coast Mountain Range with storms, leaving behind epic powder days and deep tree skiing throughout the winter months.

Deep Winter has invited five photographers to team up with athletes of their choosing, and spend three days inbounds on Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Their goal is to capture the essence of the legendary winter storms and bring that to life in a slideshow presentation. The photographers will present their work in front of judges and the public on Saturday, January 6 in Whistler.

Deep Winter will showcase some of the who’s who among Whistler’s ski and snowboard photographers. Contest participants include: Whistler ski photography legend Paul Morrison; Future Snowboarding Magazine photo editor and long-time Whistler snowboard photographer Dano Pendygrasse; Snowboarder Magazine’s senior photographer Oli Gagnon; contributing photographer to Transworld Snowboarding and Snowboard Canada Dice-K Maru; and 2005’s Powder Magazine ‘photo of the year’ winner Bryn Hughes. The five will compete for $3,250 in prize money and the right to boast the title ‘king of storms’. This contest will be a deeply inspiring event for every winter storm lover, as each photographer will no doubt deliver a compelling journey through Whistler’s deep winter.

“This contest was born out of the fact that many ski or snowboard photos depict blue sky days and don’t often pay tribute to the awesome winter weather that can roll through the mountains,” says Mike Douglas, professional skier, long time Whistler local, and the inspiration behind the contest. “The really stormy days here in Whistler make for some epic days on the mountains. This contest is all about celebrating and embracing that weather, and sharing those moments with others who are as passionate about winter storms!”

The slide show, taking place at Millennium Place on Saturday January 6, will be followed by a party at the newly renovated Glacier Shop, located right across the pedestrian stroll. Millennium Place doors open at 7pm with the slide show beginning at 8pm. Tickets for the slide show and after-party are $9.99 and can be purchased at Millennium Place, Ticketmaster or online at Ticketmaster.ca.

“What a great way to celebrate the drama of the coastal storm season,” says John Irvine, Sports Marketing Director at ARC’TERYX. “At ARC’TERYX we are inspired by the majesty of the mountain environment, and each storm provides a fresh and dynamic canvas for these artists/photographers, and the athletes they will work with. To assemble Whistlers’ best photographers to capture this as a subject will be a unique and amazing spectacle.”

“We are very excited to bring these five amazing local photographers together under one roof to see what they create after three days on the mountains,” says Whistler Blackcomb’s public relations & communications manager Christina Moore. “This contest really speaks to our roots as a resort. Whistler has built its reputation in part on our stormy weather, as this is what delivers such incredible ski conditions throughout the winter. We’re thrilled to be celebrating this along with these renowned photographers. It’s going to be a great event.”

The three judges for the event include well-known professional Whistler snowsports photographer Eric Berger, Snowboard Canada’s photo editor and snowboard photographer Colin Adair, and ARC’TERYX’s Creative Director Tom Duguid. Deep Winter is presented in partnership by ARC’TERYX and Whistler Blackcomb, along with media partners Snowboard Canada and Skier Magazines.

Event information, current snow conditions and accommodation deals for the January 6th weekend are all available at whistlerblackcomb.com/deepwinter.

Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: POW PARKS
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

It's been epic snow in Whistler with powder conditions almost daily. Not that you should be spending that much time in the park in conditions this awesome, but that doesn't stop the crew.

The Park teams have been digging out rails, building, fences, signs, etc. with shovels & snow cats! Lots of new snow & more groomers coming on line means the Parks will expand just in time for the holiday season. Expect to see more rails & hits going in on the Habitat Park as we expand onto the Bobcat line and add more M – L features including some of the new rails.

Over on Blackcomb, the Highest Level Park will also see more of our new technical rails being installed along with more hits & jibs on the main Nintendo park. We should have the Terrain Garden ready just before Christmas.

Huge props to the day & night Park teams for dealing with all the snow. Ullr, you’re doing a great job so far this winter!

On the drive back to camp I had a thought. How much fan mail does Mr. T. get these days? He's pretty under the radar now, but brought tears of joy to Mohicans everywhere when he mopped the floor with Stallone in Rocky III. I thought I'd write him tonight. Here's a copy in case I offend him and he hitch-hikes to P.G. and bodyslams me.

Dear Sir Lawrence Turead aka Mr. T.,

In case you hadn't heard, up working off of Mile 90 of the Alaska Highway probing trees looking for pine beetle. The guys I work with are crazier than Murdock. The best way to describe them is if you donated a dozen ATVs and snowmobiles to the people living on the streets around Main and Hastings St. in Vancouver. They're a bunch of wasted ex-cons, ripping around on machines with no regard for personal safety, only stopping to light their cigarettes.

The beetles up here are pretty much on a killing spree. They're spreading fast because of the favorable temperatures due to global warming. I know you're an environmentalist- you said you'd rather walk than fly with that crazy sucka Murdock. If you do want to save Northern BC, you could do a bit more hand to hand combat rather than using your tank, or park the A Team van and instead have the crew take the bus on your next mission. I like to think of us as an elite force designed to eradicate entomological boreal domination. We're a bunch of guys straight out of prison for crimes "We swear we didn't commit." Pretty much, we're the A Team of Northern North America.

Glad to hear you made it through your battle of cancer. Sorry you had to sell your gold chains to pay for your medical bills, but you said it yourself: "You don't need chains when you got a heart of gold." I get all my facts from the National Inquirer that covered your story so well. I tried to do some fundraising, but used the money to buy some gold tire chains for our Ford Super Duty.

I don't get along with a lot of these whiteys in camp. Half are whinos, the other half are complainos. I think a couple of them are starting to befriend me because I'll break trail through the snow and don't eat any of the pork chops. I ain't buying it. I believe it was in the movie Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool that you said, "Be somebody, or you'll be somebody's fool. Or was it in the movie, Baby-Punching Supersuckas for Megabot 9 ? I always get those two mixed up.

I know it sounds like I'm messing around but I do care. When I was nineteen I bet a guy ten bucks that he didn't know what your favorite type of music was. How could he have known the answer was Gospel? I was positive he's say Pre-2Unlimited Trantastic Trip-Hop. I paid up, so don't ever say I never stuck my neck out to make a difference.

Yours Fooly,

Crease Mansfoo of the Castlegar gang The Supasuckas Relay Erasers, circa 1998.

Minus twenty five up in the Great White North….

I've finished up my last shift and, this time, I won't be going back. I'm getting a little too attached to rednecks and have to space myself before I become what I fear. On one of the last days one of them came to be about to cry. "Freezer made fun of me because I thought eight and four equals thirteen. I have mentally problems." Looking at me like a teary eyed puppy dog, with the IQ to match, I'm starting to realize how it can sometimes be harder to part with something you hate than something you love. Why? I haven't a damn clue. When I find out I let you know. But by that time I'll own four quads and be paying child support from my fifth marriage. Yep, I gotta go because I'm starting to fit in.

Mentally Yours,

Crease

"FOX Sports is happy to be working in conjunction with our brethren at FUEL to bring the Arby's Action Sports Awards to the entire country," said FOX Sports President Ed Goren. "Action sports are growing in popularity every year, and this show highlights the best of the best."

The Arby’s Action Sports Awards is produced by Future Mainstream Productions and the award-winning team of Bob Bain and Mike Burg, veterans of such events as the "Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards" and the "Teen Choice Awards." FUEL TV is supporting the event with its signature red carpet series "Blue Carpet Special," a special preview show premiering November 6, and will re-telecast the Arby’s Action Sports Awards throughout December.

"The growth and popularity of action sports is at an all-time high and it is time to honor such amazing feats as Shaun White’s Olympic Gold Medal and Travis Pastrana’s double backflip at the X Games," said Bain. "Not only do children aspire to be the next Pastrana or White, but the music and entertainment industries have a true affinity for these sports, so we look forward to putting together a memorable event for viewers."

Arby’s has signed on to be the presenting sponsor and other major sponsors include Jeep®, Activision and Nike. "Through this event, we’ve been able to create an unprecedented integrated marketing platform to reach the highly sought-after male 14-34 demo in the fourth quarter," said Burg. "For a creative and aggressive marketer, the opportunities to work with the show are endless"

"This was a fantastic opportunity for us to partner with a brand new awards program that recognizes young athletes for extraordinary talents," said Debra Mager, Senior Vice President of National Advertising, Arby’s Restaurant Group, Inc. "These kids take risks and excel at being different, which is something we at Arby’s have always prided ourselves on."

A panel of industry experts nominated the top athletes in 20 different categories. Many of the awards are sport and gender specific such as Skateboarder of the Year (male and female) and FMX Rider of the Year. Achievements that transcend the genre have been nominated in categories such as Rider of the Year, Huevos Grande and Performance of the Year.

My Blog: new gf
By: jschaab

Well I couldn't handle the wait for more snow so I hooked up with a new girl, she's from wisconsin and knows how to party.  braaaaap!

I got her out for her maiden rip on Seymour last week with Andrew and Thomas. We did the classic lap...Top Tower - CBC-Corkscrew-Pingu-Salvation-Team Pangor-Empress Connector, followed by a hot lap down the new jump trail.  She's fast, plush, stable and pedals well for a 9" bike.

I also had a chance to introduce her to Pemby on Sunday.  Her low bottom bracket helped to rail Cream Puff and her slack head angle and plush suspension slayed Meat Grinder.

Cypress shuttle this weekend anyone?
